This is a bit embarrassing but my google-fu returns nothing, so:
I was playing X-Com (1) when I had to leave my laptop. Naturally, I pressed hibernation and away I went.
Now that I arrive home to finish my X-COM game, I get a smaller screen size than what I set in. This is OK and I had this before: I just logged in and I went right back to my X-COM game.
However, today after doing this, the only available part of the login screen is the shut down button. I can't change resolution to login!
I can access the computer in safe mode, thankfully. Is there a file or registry value that you can change to change my desckup resolution?

From the advanced startup menu, rather than choosing Safe Mode, choose Enable VGA Mode. That'll force your desktop and the login screen back to 640x480, and let you reset the resolution once you've logged in.
