Raids target Christian militia in Midwest

I think you're pretty right here. I mean, the Republican Party may be glad that people are finally upset about the things the Democrats are doing, but they definitely want deniability. Glenn Beck spends months telling people that Obama is a communist, and the country is descending into socialism, etc, but then says oh no, he never promoted violence. It's an odd relationship.

I speculate that Limbaugh and Beck is the fuse between the Republican Party and the extreme far right (who are properly seen as sort of a co-belligerent along with the corporatists and fundies that make up the real Republican Party). They come as close to telling people "hate hate kill kill communists" as anyone in the mainstream can without being forcibly thrown out of the mainstream. So they're actually speaking a language that the far right loonie types can understand (because it contains the words "hate," "kill," and "communist")... but in code that allows them to stay inside the Republicans' main tent.

But meanwhile, the Republican core is patting them on the back for their efforts in mobilizing the base while quietly looking for a place to stick the knife in, in the event that a major far-right uprising that cites Beck or Limbaugh as a founding figure crops up. By serving as a focal point for the far right's view of what the Republican Party really is, those figures form a cutout between them and the real Party, one that the Party can sacrifice if need be and still retain credibility outside the far right.

They can say "Oh, we aren't the lunatics! That's Limbaugh! Get him, boys!"

Here's some interesting new insight: the Hutaree were ratted out by the Michigan Militia, who felt that the Hutaree were too violent and extreme.

The Michigan Militia, which in past years had links to extremist groups with neo-Nazi flavorings, has moderated over the years, according to members and experts who track the organizations. Meanwhile, the Hutaree (pronounced Hu-TAR-ay), as the Stone group was called, was going the other direction, with increasing talk of violence.

'New situation for us'
The crucial moment of that tension came Saturday night when one of the Stone family members — desperate and on the run from the law — called the local militia commander, Matt Savino, and begged for help in getting guns or shelter. Mr. Savino offered neither, not only refusing to help but in fact calling the State Police, who passed the call to the F.B.I.

“This was a new situation for us, and we did what we thought was right,” Mr. Savino said.

Mr. Savino is the Michigan Militia leader that turned them in.

He got a call from one of the Hutaree asking him for help --shelter, etc-- and Savino said "no", then called the police.

As an interesting side note, Savino apparantly is also a convert to Islam.

The decision to help the police corner the Hutaree — though Mr. Savino said he was not sure his tip made any difference — has drawn flak from some other militia members in Michigan and around the country, but Mr. Savino remains comfortable with his call.

“Some people have said, ‘Those are your brothers,’ stuff like that,” said Mr. Savino, 34, a former assistant manager at a GNC nutrition and health products store, who is currently unemployed. “The problem is, most of those people aren’t here, they don’t know those people, and they don’t know what that group is.”

That would be hilarious. Although I'm sure the Foxtards would say it is part of an Obammunist secret security wing sent to pave the way for UN troops, etc.

I considered starting a militia once, it was back in the 1990's when the whole thing was all over the news. We had a Native American, a gay guy, a lesbian Jew, myself, a card-carrying Communist and a couple other "I would never picture you in a militia" types. We weren't going to do anything, just show up and be undoubtedly the most diverse "militia" in Idaho, just to throw people off the tracks a bit.

But since it was the 1990's, and there was Waco, Ruby Ridge, and Tim McVeigh and all that we figured the humor would be lost on people so we never went through with it.

Still, I think the idea of a "militia" full of everyone except Christian White Guys is still a funny prospect.
