Very few news stories have ever triggered a gag reflex but as a father of two girls this made me ill to my core. What depravity would lead someone to do this to a 7 year old - let alone your own sister - and WATCH it happen as well. Stuff like this makes me wonder what is it in people that can bring this out in them and if we're all just fucking doomed.

Commenting on news stories on April Fool's day carries its own hazards, but taken at face value, all one can say about this story is that some people are simply, for lack of a better word, evil. Sociopaths and other similar people who are broken in a fundamental way that can't be fixed can do this sort of thing and never even look back.

My sister had a "friend" in junior high who was a narcissist and quite possibly a sociopath and caused no fucking end of trouble. The bitch has been dead for years now of a drug overdose and good riddance, but having known her, she and her ilk immediately sprang to mind.

Indeed. It is an unfortunate reality that there are certain people whose first response to a crime story is to try to determine the ethnicity of the perpetrator. If it's a black guy, then they say "Aha, prejudice confirmed!" and pointedly ask why the "liberal media" is not talking about that aspect of the case. If it's a white guy, they just shrug and move on.

My father did the same thing with gender and drivers. Whenever he saw a shitty driver and it was a woman, he would go on a tirade about "stupid woman drivers". When he saw a shitty driver and it was a man, he wouldn't say anything about gender.

The correct word is "segregated", and yes, a lot of American cities are ridiculously segregated, in a way you probably can't appreciate. I still remember going to Detroit, and finding it disturbing that almost all of the hotel serving staff were black, while most of the customers were white. It gave me a creepy feeling, like I was trapped in a Gone With The Wind remake or something.

actually it pretty much is. The separation is pretty crazy. On one side of the street you can have completely white neighborhood and across the street completely black.

It's possible the parents either don't pay attention to their kids (which is often the case with sociopaths, if it happens in the months after birth.) for whatever reason, or are actively abusive themselves.

As an american I can confirm that the cities are not the only things that are segragated. the town in new jersey where i lived has less then 20 white people in the whole freaking 8th grade. There was one pakistani muslim, 4 or 5 jews, one cuban, two black people, one indian, and 3-5 asians. Everyone else was white christian. Still, there was no overt racism, and they all seemed able to accept the minorities (including one asian who they helped to teach english too, and one muslim girl who assimilated nicely apart from wearing a one piece bathing suit at the annual swim trips.) the cuban boy dated a white girl as well.
