Whether or not you approve of the behavior the homosexual couple DID ruin the prom for everyone else. Making a stand is fine until innocent people are harmed and in this case that's what happened.

The idea that rural areas can be...oh, let's say, broken by bad publicity is nice, but it is indeed patently absurd. Unless the rural area makes its living through tourism, they literally could not give a fuck about what the outside world thinks of them. We can condemn them all we want, and hell, the popular media could swarm all over the county for a few weeks. The locals will simply put their heads down and wait for the outsiders to leave, and once they do, it's back to business as before they gained the ire of the world. It is entirely possible that the school will do not face any direct consequences for this. After all, they held a prom where the lesbian student was not restriced at all. But the other students were so offended by this that they just did not show up. It is not their fault if they have a party at the same time.

At least that could (and propably will) be their official version. As long as you do not have evidence that the school WAS involved in keeping the other students away, i do not see how there could be consequences for the school.
And you can be damn sure that the comunity will keep their mouths shut, so unless there is physical evidence, the school weaseled out of this.

Besides, higher courts do not give out "harsher punishment". A positve ruling would matter because it is a bigger precendece, but since this case is so shaky right now, odds are good that you would have quite a negative outcome.

Besides, any potential court case would drag on for years, and this girl is a senior. Presumably, she'll graduate this June, move away from Hominy Grits, MS(or whatever town it is), and never come back, leaving the simple townsfolk of Hominy Grits to their own little world.

Our school requires a $60 fee for seniors and a $70 fee for juniors and guests. Florida is getting pretty ridiculous budget cuts for education when we're already low enough, so I'm glad I'm getting the fuck out of high school this year. We're losing even more money.

I mean there are so many levels that put off when hearing about this. I think the biggest one is that the people in charge quite truly do not see they are doing anything wrong. "We hold one prom for the Homo and other people we don't like, and then we hold one Prom for all the good Christian students! Everyone wins!"

As other have said they will get away with it to. You would have to drive the case to some pretty high courts to get past the inbred prejudices in the local courts. You also would have to get some pretty convincing evidence of a "Conspiracy" instead of a "Oops, we forgot to tell them about the other prom".

But again what gets me here is the fact that once again we see just how much the south has NOT changed. If the Proms backers are identified by the end of the school year, credits are restored, and letters are not sent.

Yes, as a matter of fact I did think it was funny. Not literally laughing-out-loud funny, but a nice bit of gallows humor because the alternative is to sink into a funk of deep impotent simmering anger and pointless re-treading of everything that's come and gone.

In any event, the point remains; only five attendees at the 'official' prom, so there's only five possible people to pick for Prom Queen and King, which I think is a fairly big deal in mainstream high schools - at least to the tune of getting their pictures in the year-books and such.

So wouldn't it fry the school's ass if the ACLU sued them to have the voting and contestants for that kind of shennanigan restricted to only those who were officially at the prom, and furthermore to ensure that they give it the exact same treatment as in previous years.
