Best part of the PT?
To carry on with all the PT discussion going on here lately, I was curious to know which part of the PT people would consider the coolest, most effective, etc, because let's face it, there's gotta be at least one thing even the most devoted PT-hater would like about each film. In my case, I always considered the Battle of Coruscant to be what I wanted most out of the films--a bigass space battle with lots going on. How about you?

Re: Best part of the PT?
TPM: Final Duel. Pretty much the only entertaining thing in the whole movie.
AotC: When Yoda and the cavalry arrive.
RotS: Order 66.
Battle of Coruscant was a let-down. I was hoping to see the best starfighter pilot in the galaxy blow shit up, but nope, instead we got retardo-buzz droids.

Re: Best part of the PT?
Regarding the Battle of Coruscant, I don't care much about the Buzz Droids. In fact, they gave Anakin excellent opportunities to show off his flying skill through various insanely difficult manuevers like blasting Buzz Droids off of Obi-wan's fighter or flying alongside it to knock them off with his wing. What bothered me most was the silly, campy banter and so forth. This should have been an epic scene, not a fucking comedy scene.
As for favorite scenes, I'd like to add the Obi-wan/Jango fights, both on Kamino and in orbit around Geonosis. Also, the opening scenes of Episode One were okay. The Coruscant flying car chase in Episode 2 had some good moments. And a few silly bits notwithstanding, the whole Battle of Geonosis was good.
The Yoda/Palpatine duel is in as well, just for the image of Palpatine throwing Senate pods at Yoda.

Re: Best part of the PT?
since the final duel has already been mentioned, I'd like to posit the escape scene from the beginning of TPM. When the doors open and the lighsabers ignite, we get our very first taste of what jedi in their prime are supposed to be capable of. Watching Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan mow through battle droids was pure awesome. Far greater than the pathetic performance of the Jedi in the AOTC arena battle.

Re: Best part of the PT?
Aside from the bits where they ended, I agree that the TPM duel was the highlight of that film. In AOTC, I liked the reveal shot of the clone army for the first time, and the bit where the gunship sweeps around and cuts a bunch of droids in half.
RotS is of much higher quality than the first two, but nothing really sticks out as a "favorite bit".

A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.
At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.
The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'
'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

Re: Best part of the PT?
I liked a lot of moments in the PT, which made the fail parts all the more frustrating. However, nothing compared with the duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan on Mustafar, which is arguably the moment that everything else led up to.

Order 66 wins out over the final duel for me was because its tone was perfect. The duel would win out, if not for the mood-killing, incomprehensible stupidity of that lava droid beep-booping at Obi-Wan and Anakin in the middle of their stand off on the lava. Because that's what that scene really needed - pointless childish CGI distraction.

Re: Best part of the PT?
I think the opening sequence to Revenge of the Sith is one of the best openings in the entire saga, let alone the Prequels. The camera slowly pans down over an empty star field, and we see a single Star Destroyer gracefully floating through space. Then two small fighters fly along the surface of the Star Destroyer and dive over the edge into the chaos of battle. It's really a wonderful opening, and a fantastic way to plunge the audience into the thick of the Clone Wars.
Re: Best part of the PT?
I absolutely love when Anakin screams "I hate you!" to Obi Wan in RotS. It's probably one of the few times (my memory is rusty) Hayden Christensen was convincing in the entire PT.

Re: Best part of the PT?
My favorite moment was when Palpatine went apeshit on the Jedi, before getting subdued by Mace fucking Windu, and reduced to babbling like a defenseless old man about to get his deformagrotesquetificated face stabbed by a lightsaber - before a confused Anakin, who doesn't know shit, ends up cutting off Mace Windu's hand. And then as Mace fucking Windu screams at his disamputation, Palpatine likewise screams in exultation and is incoherent as he spews horrible lightning at Windu, who writhes in pain and who ends up getting blown out of the window. Palpatine makes his proclamation of UNLIMITED POWER and, after getting rid of Windu, sighs in relief.
That was a wonderful scene. Palpatine! So awesome! His fucking face melted! And he shrieked in reptilian rage! POWERRRR!

Re: Best part of the PT?
One of the things that makes Palpatine an effective villain (at least to me) is how happy he seems when he's killing, manipulating, or generally doing evil shit. He just seems to enjoy it so much. Look at his fight with Yoda. With the exception of the times when Yoda got the upper hand, he was smiling and laughing throughout the entire fight.Shroom Man 777 wrote:

Re: Best part of the PT?
I liked most of the pod race in TPM, in AoTC when the troops are loading up in Acclimators and the speeder chase was well done with scenery that reminded me of Blade Runner. In RotS the scene that did it for me was when Windu goes to face Palpatine and it shows the sunset over the city with Amadala looking out at the temple and Anakin sitting in the councel chambers. That one scene, even more then order 66, sold the fall of the Republic for me.

Thanks for including that scene from RotS. I'd forgotten it, but it was good.Littlefoot wrote:I liked most of the pod race in TPM, in AoTC when the troops are loading up in Acclimators and the speeder chase was well done with scenery that reminded me of Blade Runner. Can't say I really liked the pod race though.

I agree that all the shit with the droids in that fight was less-than-ideal, and it always bugs me slightly, but not enough to dethrone the epic.Vympel wrote:Order 66 wins out over the final duel for me was because its tone was perfect. TPM: The brief duel between Maul and Qui-gon, very short and sweet, and came after the long annoying pod racing sequence. It felt like I had been awarded for sitting through that crap. As for the final duel, it's also pretty good.
AotC: Practically nothing, but I did like how Obi-wan faced off against Jango, and it wasn't a 'lol ima jedi you lose' fight. A Jedi for all his powers can't stop a bounty hunter from leaving.
RotS: Order 66 showing the betrayal of the Jedi, the duel between Anakin and Obi-wan, Palpatine before his face melted (I liked Palpatine up until he pulls out the lightsabre - he's a more effective villain when he's subtly drawing Anakin along and corrupting him piecemeal, but then he goes 'UNLIMITED POWAH' and I just facepalm). The Battle of Coruscant could have been perfect, but like Vympel those buzzdroids killed it for me. Similarly, the fight onboard the Invisible Hand was boss, especially how short the second match was between Anakin and Dooku, and I especially liked how easily Anakin finishes Dooku, it was a very cunning trick and very satisfying to watch. It showed how much Anakin had developed as a fighter. Then they ruin it by running through the ship and get caught in a security forcefield. 'LOL WE'RE SMARTER THAN THIS' Indeed.

Re: Best part of the PT?
I liked the final battles in all three movies. Unlike a lot of other people, I also thought the political scenes where the Republic transforms into a dictatorship under Palpatine were great. The theme of how vulnerable democracy is when threatened by fear and war was both timely and timeless, and thus very powerful to me. Most of Palpatine's temptation scenes in ROTS were awesome. Ian McDiarmid stole the show IMO.
Dude, Palpatine's power orgasm was fucking awesome and hilarious. It was fun to see a guy say something like that without the slightest bit of shame.Stofsk wrote:(I liked Palpatine up until he pulls out the lightsabre - he's a more effective villain when he's subtly drawing Anakin along and corrupting him piecemeal, but then he goes 'UNLIMITED POWAH' and I just facepalm).

TPM Jedi fights. The best ever, rivalled only by the Obiwan/Anakin duel, which was broken by the fact that they kept jumping between Yoda/Palpy, Anakin/Obiwan.

TPM: Definitely the Qui-Gon and Obi-wan vs Darth Maul fight. It's my favorite lightsaber battle of the entire Prequel Trilogy - the combination of the setting, the fight, plus the music was just so much fun to watch.
AOTC: The battle scene between the droid army and the clone army on the open terrain. Not entirely realistic, perhaps, but still quite enjoyable. Plus, I thought the scene where they manage to shoot down that gigantic orb spaceship very cool.
ROTS: Order 66, of course. The fight between Yoda and Palpatine is a very close second, along with Yoda's sudden move to wipe out the soldiers sent to kill him as part of Order 66.

Um Elfdart, I know you're always quick to defend the prequels, and I do agree that some of the hate-dom people have for them is unjustified, but you aren't seriously suggesting the naboo scenes as your favorite from AOTC are you? You're just trolling for a respones, right? No one can defend the utterly horrid "romance" in that movie. Hell, the Anakin/Padme scene on the balcony in ROTS is the only thing that prevents the movie from being a solid ten in my book.

No, he just enjoys a little reminder that Star Wars is often corny, campy and silly.
He also enjoyed the nod to The Adventures of Don Juan, where Don Juan (Errol Flynn) is putting the lip-lock on Lady Catherine (Mary Stuart) with Max Steiner's violins welling up in the background. When she says "Hurry, my husband will be back soon!" and he responds "Husband?", the violins slam on the brakes -just like in this scene where Padme pulls away from Anakin. If you found it amusing, you get Star Wars. If you didn't, you either have no sense of humor* ) or are afflicted with Nerd Rage.
* like the dorks who didn't think Starship Troopers was "serious" enough, when it was obviously pure camp
