Well, how much? Normally I wouldn't ask this, but since it appears that donations are being solicited, I would like to know what kinda financial burder is being placed on the DW for our enjoyment.

If he's paying for hosting, something like 30-100 a month and 10-30 a year for the domain name. If he's hosting himself on his own computer then one must consider the cost of bandwidth, which might hike his monthly fees by 10-50 dollars, and if he has one of those ISPs that require him to have a special server account to act as a webserver, then it might cost more per month then normal but not terribly much.

It's not an enormous burden (Kojikun's estimate is fairly accurate), but it's still money out of pocket, not to mention time (and it's not a coincidence that I'm moving to a higher-capacity server at the same time I added the button :)).

Donations are completely voluntary, of course. There's no pressure. I've just noted that a few people have said they would donate a few shekels if it were made convenient, so I thought I'd make it convenient.

I personally think banner ads and popups are more intrusive than a little Paypal button in the corner. They're usually flashy and animated and annoying as all fuck. Popups are even worse. Besides, ad revenue on the Internet is not what it once was.

*sigh* banners have been suggested before, and it wouldn't generate enough to make it worth the annoyance.

I don't know about you, but I tend to pointedly ignore all banner ads. Pop-ups make me want to kill things and break people. And I don't think I'm alone. It's probably why they make less money now than they used to.

Lucas might. There's no way to tell without contacting his ad department. IF I was looking at ads, I'd contact companies that produce fan-gear, like parksabers.com and lightechindustries.com or masterreplicas.com, or some of the many sites that sell comics or outfits or the like. They sell to a very small fringe group and consequently might be more interested in getting the word out to as many members of that group as possible.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

I think it would just slow down the forums, and those pup-up ads are really annoying. How about we just pass around a collection plate and we all throw in our 10%?
