Meh.

I'll buy it, but I'm not excited for it, not even a little bit. Uncharted 2 did cover shooter gameplay so much better than Gears did, and has the added appeal of having somewhat believable characters and more varied gameplay. All of the characters in gears have Unreal Tournament Syndrome, characterized by ludicrously muscle-bound characters and enemies that take 400 hits to go down. And yes, I'm aware they're made by the same people.
A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.

The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'

'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

Oh man, Dom with a beard? Hit me up. :) Also I guess a female Gear was inevitable, but hopefull she doesn't manage to stay that clean in the actual game.

On a more interesting note, looks like the events of the second game really did bite them in the ass. I mean, we knew there was more to Imulsion and the Lambent from the second game (and we knew there was something up with the Hollow from the first). I'm going to guess that the tentacle dudes who appeared at the end of the teaser there probably some something to do with the creation of the Sires.

Uncharted 2 did cover shooter gameplay so much better than Gears did

This is a joke right?

You're joking?

I played through uncharted2 the other week, the cover system was far inferior to gears

Well, the trailer holds up their cinematic skills. Hopefully, they'll manage to one up GoW2 in the same way it managed to one up the original.

Still, that's a good ways off.

No, no it didn't. Uncharted has weedy weapons and hilarious cover bugs (grenades can clip through cover so they stick out your side and kill you), it's good at platforming and the environments in the sequel are pretty, but the shooting bits are distinctly unsatisfying.

Nein. I'm referring to all aspects of the shooting gameplay, not just how snugly your player character fits into cover. I said "cover shooter gameplay" because "cover shooter" is practically a genre at this point. Biggest problem I have with Gears is that I find enemies to be totally unsatisfying to fight because they swallow half a (60 round) magazine before going down, and even with headshots take like ten rounds to die unless you're using a sniper rifle, in which case they still sometimes take 2.
Uncharted has weedy weapons
What do you mean by that? I basically took the AK/M4 + pistol combo wherever I went, I never had any problems except when fighting the megalame super invincible soldiers near the end, who are approaching Far Cry third act levels of lameness. If you're talking about the first one, then I would agree, but the shooting felt much better in 2.
and hilarious cover bugs
Didn't notice them? Not saying they didn't exist, but if they did I don't recall any.
but the shooting bits are distinctly unsatisfying.
Totally disagree.
it's good at platforming
Heh, I wasn't too fond of this aspect of the game except in that it gave us some nice views of scenery and gives a break from the shooting.

Now that I think about it, I think my favorite thing in the whole game is the journal Drake keeps. Cracked me up a whole bunch of times as I read through it doing puzzles and such.

Have to echo this, I also encountered the AI succesfully shooting through walls and the like. It just wasn't as well done as Gears at all.

I love Gears but the bullet sponge thing annoys the fuck out of me too. I wish game designers would stop being lazy and try things other than "lol quadruple health bar" when they want to up the difficulty factor.

It appears from the trailer that all of the barbers and personal grooming appliances were left behind in Jacinto. I really really hope that the Sires and that retarded plot line were left behind too, that level was just stupid, and now I have an even dumber enemy than the Flood from Halo cluttering up my Horde matches.

To take it back to the story aspect, I really wonder where they're going with this. In the last book,
Spoiler
they had evacuated to an island in the middle of the ocean (think Tahiti or something to analogize it to our world) and everything seemed fine. The island was even mostly untouched and isolated from the war since the ocean trenches were too deep for the Locust to get underneath. No one had found any locust, things seemed peaceful, and everyone was looking to rebuild. Anya was training to be a Gear (as we saw she is now one in the trailer) and their only real problems were some rebel factions.
Anyone have any speculation as to when it will be set? And what the hell was it that happened to turn all those people into pumice?

They'll probably blame that on the Emulsion, specifically probably an advanced rapid onset version of the disease we see in the first levels of the second game. Suppose it makes as much sense as DDS2's Culvier Syndrome...

It's like they couldn't render enough Locust on screen, so they just made each one have far more hitpoints than sense.

I was playing with a guy who was too shit to play on Hardcore, so he had the game going on Casual. I joined in as second player, and the killing felt like six thousand times better with the lower enemy HP. Unfortunately, you are now superman, because the difficulty setting was built for people who don't know how to take cover. If there was a setting where both the player and the enemies had low HP, I'd be all over that shit.
I really really hope that the Sires and that retarded plot line were left behind too, that level was just stupid, and now I have an even dumber enemy than the Flood from Halo cluttering up my Horde matches.
That level in the campaign saw me using the chainsaw more than the whole rest of the game and Gears 1 combined. And yes, the melee bumrush enemies are extremely lame in all their forms. When they just charge you like that, the silliness of the stupid nerf guns everybody has becomes evident, because if four locust charged you instead of stopping to fire you'd stand no fucking chance at all. You simply can't kill them fast enough except when you're using the occasional uberweapon you pick up (i.e. the mulcher, HoD).

Speaking of Hardcore mode. I remember one my very first Youtube videos was on just that very issue.

Mr Locust in hardcore mode eats 38 rounds to the head plus an unknown number of rounds from my team-mates. I hated Gears of War for that very reason. Godamn bullet sponges of enemies. Cover is only required in Gears of War because it takes so damn long to kill anything. Even white elites from Halo 2 went down quicker than these damn bastards.

Ahh, I see your problem now. You're shooting people with the Lancer. Shooting people with the lancer is to keep them suppressed whilst you run up and stick the business end of a chainsaw bayonet in their ass and wiggle.

If you want to actually kill things with bullets, use a Hammerburst.

Also, I hope Gears 3 has a bit like the research facility with the Sires, where it's all tense and spoooky and dark and shit, and then all of a sudden they burst out in a completely unsurprising fashion and you spend the next five minutes trying not to break down in fits of giggles whilst you chainsaw the fuck out of their helpless asses.

That was underwhelming. Everything up to the point where you encounter them was great (in comparision).

Oh geez. OMG it isn't as easy as (insert fanboys favorite game here)!! BULLET SPONGES!

Hey Locust take as many hits as you do... what is this some sort of balance?! How can I feel like a bigger nerd man if I can't cut a swath through my videogame enemies like I do in my wet dreams?!?!?

Gears 3, like 1 and 2, is going to boil down to the multi. The main game is fun as shit for sure, but I have only played through a few times a piece, and the rest of my countless hours have been spent on the crazy fun multi levels. If they even half assed built on what is already there, then the game is a winner.

Good for Gears shitting on those bullshit novels.

There's also the fact that he's playing Gears 1. Gears 2 fixed alot of balance problems.

It's boring as fuck. I'd rather they just up the damage the enemies do, up their reaction times and shit.

Gear's single player is horribly linear and really does not stand up to multiple playings at all. Halo they at least vary the enemy spawns a bit.

Try playing "Gears of Halo" style. Set the difficulty to casual but using the cover system is verboten. I know what you mean about lol endless health. Another way to make it better would be to get all retro and have non-regenerating health with health packs a rare item.

Greater customizability would help. Like playing Horde if you could customize the waves and stuff, you could simply set the health of the enemies low and up everything else.

. . . changing how the enemies spawn doesn't make something any less linear. I don't think there's any such thing as a non-linear single player campaign for an fps.

I love how people bitch that games where you are playing a military character with specific goals complains about it being linear, like military guys can just go running off all over the place willy nilly. Screw my time sensitive mission, I wanna see what is over that hill!

No, what's funny is when people complain about a style decision by making ignorant statements like 'they couldn't render enough locust'. :)

I can only imagine how shit horde would be if you replaced the tension of the action movie tough guy combat with 'realistic' MW2 'two hit youre dead' stuff.

Anyone who expects to see novel references is an idiot.

But I hope Baird and Dom get appearance toggles in multi. Dizzy can have one too.
