Anyone know why Internet Explorer stops working?

Post by Superman »

I am using Windows XP and I have noticed that sometimes IE fails to open pages, while the browser that comes with AOL will usually do it. Why would IE not open certain pages that AOL will? I don't think it has to do with the security settings. Are there any other reasons?

Are you talking about specific pages that never open, or random pages which refuse to load sometimes?

I guess random pages. I tried to click on a link earlier, and IE gave me an error. When I pasted the link into the AOL browser, it opened. This has happened a few times with random sites.

These kind of glitches are damned near impossible to diagnose above and beyond merely saying that IE is a Microsoft program. It's not supposed to work properly all of the time.

If you want a reliable web broswer, use Mozilla.

Isnt the AOL browser a wrapper around IE?

As usual, I doubt this flaw is in Explorer, maybe some other part of the system.

I think the most recent version is a wrapper around Netscape 7 (AKA Mozilla). Previous versions were simply Internet Explorer with a new icon instead of the Windows/globe one.

That's only the Mac version; the Windows version still comes bundled with a mangled IE6 wrapper.

Could you be specific on the error? Did it give a DNS error msg?

If anything, the AOL browser is a crippled version of Internet Exploder.

It is simply because you have AOL installed. AOL takes over your OS and brands its own modded version of IE, with no regard to the consequences to the legitimate thing.

AOL sucks. Ass. Pretty much the only way to completely remove its crappy software from your machine is by running FORMAT C:

Using IE6:
Tools->Internet Options->Advanced-> make sure the box 'Reuse windows for launching shortcuts' is unchecked (Listed under 'Browsing')

I rarely have problems with IE, certainly no more often then I have with other browsers I've used. Really with billions of web pages around nothings ever going to work perfectly, and there are so many opportunities for errors on servers and pages themselves it hard to tell when it really is your browser failing. I lose more time to problems with my ISP and connection then with my browser.
