What case is falling apart? Is Cafiero being personally sued, because I don't see how a case against the district is "falling apart."
It looks like the district is putting most of the blame on Cafiero and doing everything they can to wash their hands of it. Given Cafiero's emails I don't get the "falling apart" remark either.
translation: the districts lawyer is being a lawyer and trying to claim that the kids case is falling apart, which it obviously is not.

Was that a single incident? 400 photographs for one person. 42 times. That could be Sixteen thousand personal photos of other people. Every single person involved in this case from the school is going to go down in flames.
Actually the school district is now admitting they took 56,000 thousand photographs...
Lower Merion School District employees activated the web cameras and tracking software on laptops they gave to high school students about 80 times in the past two school years, snapping nearly 56,000 images that included photos of students, pictures inside their homes and copies of the programs or files running on their screens, district investigators have concluded.
This could bankrupt the school district. The level of liability here and civil rights violations is significant.

This is what happens when you don't follow the rules and you let the administrators get away with whatever they feel like.
If someone had blown the whistle on anyone like Cafiero before this came to light, the school district could have gotten away with saying 'this was a rogue person, we dealt with the problem' without having to worry too much about civil suits, let alone criminal liability against the school district itself and the people in charge of it. Instead... well, there are going to be a lot of people going to jail, I think. Whether it will bankrupt the school district or not is hard to say, but this will probably be a precedent-setting case.

It's not dificult at all to spin this into a racket by child pornographers.
It shouldn't be, considering that in America there have been several cases over the past couple of years where children themselves have been successfully charged with possession of child-porn after having sent naked pictures of themselves to their girlfriends / boyfriends, via cellphones and IM, and placed on sex offender lists as a result of those charges. This case strikes me as a much more appropriate use of those kind of laws.

Uhm, how are these two situations even remotely comparable? In this case they have the pictures because the administrators were inappropriately using the laptops to monitor the kids. It's more akin to a creepy landlord that installs video cameras in your toilet while you're not there than kids sexting pictures of themselves to each other.

General, I think you completely missed the point.
The laws against child porn in the US are so strict that even the teenagers sending pictures are getting hit by them. It is, and I quote cosmicalstorm directly, "a much more appropriate use of those kind of laws" to go after school administrators who install cameras and (accidentally) take naked pictures with them. Because (this seemed fairly obvious to me) that is way creepier and more worthy of punishment.

Meh, looks like I misread it. I blame trying to do too much at once.
