Virginia AG's 'modesty'... And a stark similarity.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli apparently isn’t fond of wardrobe malfunctions, even when Virginia’s state seal is involved.

The seal depicts the Roman goddess Virtus, or virtue, wearing a blue tunic draped over one shoulder, her left breast exposed. But on the new lapel pins Cuccinelli recently handed out to his staff, Virtus’ bosom is covered by an armored breastplate.

When the new design came up at a staff meeting, workers in attendance said Cuccinelli joked that it converts a risqué image into a PG one.

The joke might be on him, said University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato.

“When you ask to be ridiculed, it usually happens. And it will happen here, nationally,” he said. “This is classical art, for goodness’ sake.”

It wouldn’t be the first time that Cuccinelli has found himself in a punch line since taking office. The conservative Republican made Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” in March after he advised state colleges and universities they lack the legal authority to protect gay employees from discrimination.

“You can’t be gay in college?” host Jon Stewart asked in mock disbelief. “That’s the whole point of going to college!”

If the jokes start to fly, Cuccinelli can’t say he didn’t see it coming, Sabato said – not after what happened in 2002, when U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft ordered drapes installed to cover partially nude statues at the Justice Department. “Ashcroft had one excuse: it hadn’t been done before and he wasn’t prepared for the critical onslaught that he faced,” Sabato said. “Cuccinelli has no excuse at all. He knows what’s coming because of what happened to Ashcroft. You can only conclude that he enjoys being the center of pointless controversy.”

Efforts to reach Cuccinelli on Friday were unsuccessful.

His spokesman, Brian Gottstein, said the pin was paid for by Cuccinelli’s political action committee, not with taxpayer funds. He acknowledged that the attorney general has pointed out Virtus’ “more modest attire,” adding that the rendition chosen by his boss “harkens back to an older version of the seal.”

The Great Seal of the Commonwealth is a two-sided image that dates to 1776.

The side depicted on the state flag features Virtus standing victoriously over Tyranny, a male figure prone on the ground in defeat, his crown fallen from his head. Beneath him is the motto Sic Semper Tyrannis: Thus Always to Tyrants.

Three Roman goddesses – Libertas, Aeternitas and Ceres – grace the reverse side of the seal. Cuccinelli isn’t the first to have less-revealing garments placed on Virtus.

Multiple varieties of the seal have been used over the years, said State Capitol historian Mark Greenough. The modern version is based on language added to the state code in 1930, which specifies that Virtus is “dressed as an Amazon” while clutching a spear in one hand and a sword in the other.

The secretary of the commonwealth, Janet Polarek, is charged by law with being the keeper of the seal. Asked for an assessment of Cuccinelli’s interpretation, she declined to offer an opinion. When Virtus was fighting Tyranny, Polarek said, “a dress code was probably not her first concern.”
It does come off as a quirky, Ashcroftian waste of money on a silly moment of modesty.

Except you look at the three seals.

Are you this fucking stupid?

No wait, you are.

I did heavy research into civil war flags; and 99% of them were simply that state's seal at the time painted onto an infantry-blue background.

This BTW, is why so many US States have "bedsheet blue" flags -- when it came time to create a flag in the 1900s; the influence of the Civil War was Strong.

And compared to today's state seals; the civil war era seals were different in many cases.

Here's an example even you can recognize.

The clothes that the two people are wearing are totally different in cut and color, and elements like the scroll above the red hat are missing in later formal versions.

It does however make little sense of covering up classical art, even if it just a modern interpretation. Oh noes, Breasts.

This uncultivated prude should go visit the louvre. Or Rome. Or Greece. Or any other place where people enjoy sculptured art.

So for his next performance in finding and ferretting out hidden confederate sympathizers; Nitram will take on the entire state of Maryland, including many institutions of Maryland such as the Baltimore Ravens, and the University of Maryland...

I hardly think one 'find and ferrets out' a confederate sympathizer when they're part of a state's government which openly sympathizes with the Confederacy, and does so in the form of a month dedicated to it.

To think you call me stupid for noting the AG's lapel version of his proposed revision lots alot less like Virtus standing over an armoured knight-type with spear and sword, the image he claims to be the source of his inspiration, and alot more like the one with only the spear, the chainmail top, standing over a guy in blue and grey with a spear.. Which is the same in the latter two.

As opposed to the modern seal, which has a boobie ZOMG HORROR. Keep your ranting MK, I'm sure someone gives a shit...

Holy shit, because nothing happened between 1861 and 1865 in Virginia! Absolutely nothing at all. Why, nobody knows why Winchester, VA happened to spontaneously burn down no less than 40 times between those four years....

I finally identified that flag shown on the left by that magazine. It was hard; but I finally found it on a virtual tour of the VA state Capital:

Image
A large Virginia flag, which flew over the Capitol building when Richmond fell in 1865, is on display in the exhibit area. The flag was “captured” by a Massachusetts major who took the prize home with him after the war. His grandson returned the flag to the state in 1927.
Both are "confederate symbols", if we go by the vague interpretation you put forth.

Back in the day, there was no formal way to draw/paint a state seal -- other than vague worded "amazon over tyrant" description.

Things weren't formalized until the 20th century, and before that even in offical state seals used for stamping documents there was much variation:

Image
Virginia Seal 1851; No Boobs, and no armor.

Image
Virginia Seal, 1875. BOOBIES and no armor.

Image
Virginia Seal, 1889. No Boobs and armor.

Image
Virginia Seal, 1904. No Boobs and armor

Image
Virginia Seal, 1911. BOOBIES, and no armor.

Don't be a fucking idiot. Confederate History Month was obviously intended to glorify the Confederacy and exclude Virginia Unionists, while at the same pretending that the war wasn't about slavery. Do you think for a moment that they were going to mention the most successful Virginian in the war, George Thomas, who commanded the Army of the Cumberland and was never defeated in a battle while fighting for the Union?

Exclude? They got their own state. :P

As you might have deduced, I am a reconcilationist; I don't apply to the radical republican or lost cause view.

The reason nobody's ever heard of him is he never wrote his memoirs and burned his papers.

"Let them up easy Sam"? Whatever happened to crushing your enemies and recreating their political, social and economic structure so that the Republicans would get the federal government for the rest of the century?
