Yeah, I don't see how you could possibly reach such a conclusion without knowing anything about the make-up of the Icarus planet's core.

Re: SGU 115: Lost (Spoilers)
It might be something based off the ZPM's purported ability to destroy planets when overloading and comparisons to the Icarus planet's explosion when it went up? But I can't know until I see what the claims are.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.
The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'
'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

Link. In short, a ZPM has on one occasion, drained itself almost instantly, a peak power far beyond what Atlantis usually draws, and easily more than Icarus can reasonably be imagined to output.

Oh god, that would be like the best idea for a novelty portable power supply ever. Do they make portable power supplies? Like ones you can stick regular power plugs into? They should, and they should shape them like ZPMs.The Yosemite Bear wrote:We just use the anchient communication thingies to order ZPMs from think geek.

Re: SGU 115: Lost (Spoilers)
You could make it look like just a big battery with a glow-up portion, and you'd hook stuff into the ZPM's "base" so you could recharge your laptop, phone, ipod and jumpstart your car all in one portable package.
That does raise questions about how they actually could ever get home. Since a ZPM must have as much power as the naquadah planet (at least in terms of a single moment of peak output to get a wormhole going) either the gate itself was something special or destiny should have the ability to dial Earth.
That or they really are just fucked until they find something out there with a wormhole drive or something similar.

Re: SGU 115: Lost (Spoilers)
Given ludicrous hyperdrive speeds in SGverse, they aren't likely to be worse off than Voyager was in trip time. Probably better off, actually. I'm sure they will get wormhole drived home, because it's inclusion in the SGA finale seemed almost like a last minute inclusion, it didn't really jive well with the script and was totally unnecessary in the story. I'm almost certain it's inclusion was to set it up for use at some stage in SGU.
Of course, even with wormhole drive, won't the power requirements be just as bad as dialoging the Destiny? Unless they do months of galactic-length hopping to make up the distance, of course.

Wormhole drive was, according to producers, intended to be used for Destiny's FTL, but they changed their minds on that, in favour of the warp drive we see.
I don't know why people are thinking it's got infinite range by the by.

Oh god, I wrote "dialogueing" instead of "dialing".
And the thing about WHD isn't infinite range, but instantaneous travel. Even if it only has the "can cross 1 galaxy instantly" range, it can just do a series of jumps with very brief gaps between them, and beat out conventional hyperdrive speeds by orders of magnitude. They probably could jump straight to the destiny, assuming nigh unlimited power. I imagine that since it's wormhole based, power requirements vs range will be as they are for stargates, longer ranged jumps = needs more power.
Unfortunately, we have no idea of actual power requirements, so it'll just be up to whatever the writers need it to be like.

Re: SGU 115: Lost (Spoilers)
Yeah, I think it was the speed issue, not the range one. Assuming you can make Wormhole Drive technology safe enough you could catch up to destiny after enough hops. Even if they took a month or two months or three months of hopping that's still a very survivable time for Destiny's crew to hunker down and survive, so basically regardless of how far it goes (Earth to Pegasus as an upper limit even) it goes it so fast that you could catch up so long as you have the juice to fly it.
Do we even have confirmation about what Atlantis is up to? Did they send it back to Pegasus, or is it sitting around as Earth's new defense platform? The Chair we used to fire our drones got toasted, but you can fire them from Atlantis to be sure.
That's basically got nothing to do with this episode, just wondering.
I'm hoping that Destiny switches on, like, all of it's hyperdrives and goes rocketing across the void so far that the stones get de-synced or something, and for a season we just get some good ol' exploration and character growth episodes.

But how will you know who is fucking who back on Earth without the stones ?I'm hoping that Destiny switches on, like, all of it's hyperdrives and goes rocketing across the void so far that the stones get de-synced or something, and for a season we just get some good ol' exploration and character growth episodes.
But seriously I think the producers dropped the silly stone centric drama scenes on Earth. Five episodes gone already and not a single moment of those cringe worthy scenes so far. Its a sign the show is improving.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Re: SGU 115: Lost (Spoilers)
We have a very solid idea. Ignoring the fanon that it drained three ZPMs that gets bandied about, we know that the Ancients abandoned it in part because of the energy requirements were truly extortionate; and these were the chappies with knowledge of how to produce ZPMs and such. Far beyond Earth's capacity.adam_grif wrote:Oh god, I wrote "dialogueing" instead of "dialing".

They were planning a film, so we're in info backout on that. All we know is that Atlantis was definately on Earth as of Air (according the Mallozi) and McKay is doing something too important to be disturbed; explaining why he's not been brought in via stones.Covenant wrote:Yeah, I think it was the speed issue, not the range one. Unless McKay is working 24/7, it doesn't make sense. They could steal him for a day, for half a day. Personally, I want to see McKay, Carter, Zelenka, and Jackson all on the Destiny at once.

So Chloe has inherited Teyla's superpower of being kidnapped by aliens and gaining some of their innate abilities?
As for wormhole drive, all that buildup and we didn't get to see it in action. Meh.

Would Mccay have to be in the SGC (i.e using that exact stone interface) he could simply be on another planet (or back in pegasus if the movie happens) and unable to get back easily.

Speaking of Hyperdrive technology. I once calced the numbers for Asgard FTL. And I used one of the more conservative numbers for their FTL speeds. Turns out the Asgard could cross the entire Universe in just 14 years. Things get more entertaining when we consider the Asgard traveling between Galaxies in under an hour.

I think it comes out as weeks, using more realistic numbers.

Weeks to cross the Universe? My figure of 14 years is based on 6 hour travel time with an estimated distance of 3 million light years.NecronLord wrote:I think it comes out as weeks, using more realistic numbers.
Depending on how fast you can calculate Asgard travel time from their home Galaxy to the Milkway, we have some figures. We have good estimates of the galactic neighborhood. Andromeda is our nearest neighbor at 3 million light years. And I believe they listed Pegasus at 3.5.

Andromeda is 2.5 Million, Pegasus Irregular Dwarf (which actually exists, there's another one, but the one at 3 million, as stated in the show) is 3.Alyeska wrote:Weeks to cross the Universe? There are closer satellites, but it's a fair bet Ida is further than either, given that it seems to take a ZPM-304 more than a day to get there. And of course, if the Galaxy in Exodus is it, it's four million light years.
Using that figure, and say, five minutes (see for example, Small Victories, where the Valkyrie seems to take a very short time to get back to Earth indeed.
4 million ly/ 5mins = 48 million ly/hour = 1,152 ly/day.
