Perhaps this is used as some sort of ritual for journalists? Send the new guy to report on the same story every few years, they never know the difference.
Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.

Well, for those who are interested, here's James Randi:

Man, I'm still awed by Randi's awesome beard (and the eyebrows! Man, the eyebrows!)
And,uh, his message is pretty good, too. I guess
Funny...the capability to live without food or water would qualify as a paranormal ability, right? So the guy would be eglible for Randi's reward

He outright stated that it would qualify - of course not without actual test, because the errors in these supposed tests are just too obvious.Funny...the capability to live without food or water would qualify as a paranormal ability, right? So the guy would be eglible for Randi's reward

Yeah, I thought about that cop-out. Maybe someone should write him a letter explaining that he could easily donate those millions of dollars towards improved education for the underprivileged in India.
I always wonder about that... my mother's old friend from high school is really into reflexology. I've talked to her, and I know she genuinely, strongly believes that what she's doing is good and right, and useful. All of these new age fringe movements are full of people that are constantly convincing themselves that they're dealing with something real. I don't see how you could do a justification like that with something like that, where you very blatantly must be drinking water and eating food and genuinely lying about it.
Is the prospect of fame/notoriety enough? Why does that whole "morality" thing come into play with such people?

You're not fit to use the title "Neurologist" you incompetent fucking dolt. We know how the human body gains energy and processes it, and it has nothing to do with woo-woo powers from beyond.stormthebeaches wrote:Turns out that he's either legitimate or Indian scientists are really incompetent.

Seriously, go back to praying, and do not ever get near a human being again with the intent of diagnosing anything. Jackass.
God help you if you get sick in India, and a guy like this has to diagnose you. What's next, bloodletting to combat the common cold?
"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.

I do not believe in any of his claims but the whole thing got me thinking about one thing.
We know how certain parts of the world (India included) are well, religious to the bone about these things. So, presumably if you used some of his meditations techniques and such to teach to the troops and actually convince them that they should work, even thou they do not actually work would this not still be beneficial in terms of morale? And would this possibly quite marginal improvement in morale be worth the resources it takes to implement something like that? What do you think?

It has become clear to me in the previous days that any attempts at reconciliation and explanation with the community here has failed. I have tried my best. I really have. I pored my heart out trying. But it was all for nothing.
You win. There, I have said it.
Now there is only one thing left to do. Let us see if I can sum up the strength needed to end things once and for all.

Meditation has tangible benefits. For one, it's great to get or stay calm.Purple wrote:I do not believe in any of his claims but the whole thing got me thinking about one thing.

It won't miraculously heal your wounds or sustain you, and i'm not even sure wether claims about increasing the time you can life without food/water are true (going into a trance while resting while you wait to be resuced, not miraculously nourishing yourself).
But they can definately be usefull to release stress, which is an usefull skill for a soldier (not in combat, of course.)

Yeah that's what I meant, I worded that poorly.PeZook wrote:Actually, tons of people tried. None were actually able to demonstrate their paranormal abilities.Gramzamber wrote:Money has a powerful lure, if this Indian guru is too "enlightened" to go for it, then somebody with paranormal powers already would have.
Of course, strangely, no one has. It'd be interesting to see how long this guru would last under constant supervision with no bathroom breaks.
I love James Randi by the way.
I wonder why...
What I meant to say is that no "true" psychic/guru/alien god/whatever has gone through this kind of scrutiny. Meaning of course that they don't exist.

I have purged this thread.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.
