Indiana Rep. Souder says he'll resign over affair

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Republican Rep. Mark Souder says he'll resign from Congress effective Friday over an affair with a staffer.
Souder says in a statement provided by his office Tuesday that he has "sinned against God, my wife and my family by having a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff."
He scheduled a news conference to discuss his future.
Souder won a bruising Republican primary on May 4 to be nominated for his ninth term representing northeastern Indiana.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A House GOP source says eight-term Indiana Republican Mark Souder is going to announce that he is resigning from office.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of the expected announcement, says Souder is expected to announce his resignation in Fort Wayne, the center of the district he has represented since being elected in 1994 when Republicans took over the House after 40 years of Democratic control.
Souder is a social conservative and strong advocate of gun rights whose district has been strongly contested by Democrats in the past.

Bit of a surprise really, though given his district is becoming increasingly Democrat might have something to do with it.

I don't honestly think a congressman should have to resign over an affair, but if they decide to do so because they don't want to deal with the crap they're going to get from the electorate... I respect that.

Hypocrisy, I think is the only really good reason - and given how much of a mad-on these folks have against damaging the "sanctity of marriage" and all that, that's gotta sting.

Personally, I think there's a strong possibility that there is more to the story than we're currently hearing. There may very well be some extenuating circumstances that he feels is going to bring him down regardless, and thus wants to avoid the inevitable and try to mitigate any damage to himself.

Yeah, this is probably the biggest factor in the decision. It's kind of hard to a be a part of the so-called 'Family Values' Party and then have an affair. You're pretty much morally obligated to resign at that point.

Never stopped them from being hypocrites before, but he probably won't have as much support back home if he had to fight off a challenger earlier in a primary. Combine that with some actual backbone, and there you are.
