I think, judging by Chirac's statement, that the French government would like to think that the EU is primarily France and Germany. Of course, everybody else in Europe (and many in France and Germany) don't necessarily see things that way.

 Damn, he was on a good rant there wasn't he?

Did he ever stop to consider that many of the nations he's bashing might
still get into the E.U. and they might remember his rant and hold it against France for a long time?

That's not possible. They want and need money, lots of it, to get closer to the E.U prosperity level. That means they must behave when dealing with the big, rich E.U members.

Not to mention that if Chirac really didn't want them in, he could just veto the whole enlargement process (an ability that all current memembers have). Which is kind of funny if you think about it. The Euro-sceptics (most vocal in Britain, and really given their position who could blame them?) argue two things; the EU isn't democratic enough and thus it's stupid and that they don't want to see a federal EU. Well here's the clincher, in order to make the EU more democratic then the powers possesed by the nation-states would have to be lessened, meaning no more veto for one, and yet if that happens the EU is more federal!

It's a non-win situation with such diometrically (is that a word?) opposed view points.

It seems SK has been turning just as anti-American as France is. Their protest-happy populace is saying things about us just as bad as the kind of crap we usually hear from Arabs. If that's the way they really feel about us, fine — let's pull out those 37,000 American soldiers that are protecting their homeland and watch how quickly Kim Jong Il swallows them up.

Good idea. We also have to remember to take all of the mines we burried in the DMZ. Wouldn't want someone to accidently stumble upon one of those.

The more I hear about the EU the more it reminds me of the US prior to the Civil War where groups of states were aligned against each other and new states were ususually added in pairs, one on each side, to prevent either side from gaining the upper hand.

I never knew European politics could be such an intersting spectator sport. :D

It's not like that. The countries are not members yet, and some will never be. Joining the E.U is not a favour they do to us, it is a favour we do to them. There's no reason the E.U couldn't stand forever with the current size. Our population is already bigger than that of the U.S.

The countries want to come in, and want money, lots of it. When you're applying to an organization you don't have any rights within that organization, and it's a bit dumb to annoy the members, since they have the power to keep you out. It's like some south american country deciding it wants to join the U.S, and at the meantime ligning with the E.U decisions. Some members of the U.S would be annoyed (asscroft?).

It was a general consensus, although of course some people wanted them in and others wanted them out. There are very good reasons to say they're not ready yet. One of them is, nobody wants a shaky government (and policed by the military) inside the E.U. It could give way to dangerous situations.

Possibly but that is also the problem with the Eu as it stands, There is too much bickering between members and quite frankly...it seems as if they have no resolve, not that America and Britain are doing the right thing by pressing for war but something must be done to sort the situation as is right now..

Two days ago there was a meeting between all the E.U rulers to find a common voice on the war matter. As far as I know, it was successful. We are getting more federal each day (the Constitution is at an advanced stage, the talks about the new E.U government too, etc). These things take time.

It was most certainly a succesful event. Basically the result of the meeting was: Iraq must improve its co-operation with UN or bear the consequences. And who says that Europeans don't have balls? ;)

Exactly. We will be paying a large share of their rebuilding efforts, but it will undoubtedly pay off in the future. The economical gap between former Eastern Bloc countries and current EU is huge, comparable to the differences between Mexico and USA.

You know, by this thinking, the UN should be bowing to the will of the US. After all, we foot about 27% of the bill ourselves, and there are how many countries involved with it?

Not a valid comparison. The countries members of the U.N do not receive money from the U.N, or the U.S, and it would be an insignificant quantity of money even if they did.

Portugal, on the other hand, had a cash flow of 10 million dolares per day in the first ten years after joining the E.U.

We're talking about the complete revamping of a country in less than a decade. That's the main reason they're so eager to join.

If what you're saying is true, then it only adds to France and Germany's arrogance. "Bow to our will, or forget about getting into the EU." Ironically, this means Schroeder's conquests will be more impressive than Hitler's. Now Germany will be able to make a huge chunk of Europe bow to his will without the cost of a single German soldier.

I appreciate the re-education here, Olrik. I used to think the EU might be something worthy of respect — now I know better.

I agree that Chirac was out of line. He didn't speak for the E.U or Germany.

As you could see a while ago, Both Portugal and Spain, among other E.U members, made a proclamation supporting the U.S on the matter, and Chirac didn't bitch about it. And that's about all he can do about those other countries, IMO. He can whine, but there's no question about reviewing their entrance in the E.U.

But the fact remains. Those countries went against the same people who are supporting them, to please the U.S. Germany is a staunch defender of the expansion to the east, and at the same time the country which will lose more money with it. It's natural to be annoyed to see people you are helping going against you in public.

Please, do tell me if all the U.S would be fine in the situation I described earlier, with Mexico applying for U.S membership and at the same time ligning up with the E.U on matters of external politics.

I believe the U.S have their share of asshole politics too.

You're absolutely right. The US is the land of bi-partisan political hell. Republicans say everything is the Democrats' fault and vice-versa, and not much gets done in the meantime.

As for Mexico, I think the only two states that would be in favor of merging the two countries would be California and New Mexico. The latter's population and culture is dominantly Mexican anyway, and California would eventually get a break from all the illegal aliens once life was improved south of the border.

The other 48 states would say a hearty FUCK NO to adding a large third-world nightmare to Washington's responsibilities.
