Exactly, anyone with a modicrum of sense knows the chips will overheat at the speeds they are running at these days and take measures to compensate, it's these idiots who by a computer for christmas from a 'reputable' company like Dixons...only to find there's no fan on the chip....what happens?....they hear a glooping sound is their computer melts before their eyes...I know this as my dad just got done tending to a computer (Intel no less ) the chip had physically started to melt the motherboard, as well as the actual chip.
So it doesn't matter what chip it is....if you don't cool sufficiently...the thing will fry. Idiots like that give computer users a bad name.

Bullshit. Amd core's run almost twice as fast, not to mention all the complex instructions intels are running as Keevan mentioned where Amd runs only simple commands to do the same job, for games and general leisure, Amd's are superiour. For Business with their floating points, Intels are better..

AMD processors use a better design, Intel uses an unwieldy complex instruction set meaning that while it technically clocks at a certain speed, its actual performance with real code is far lower due to variable instruction lengths and other crap....
AMD use a much much simpler instruction set meaning it runs at far closer to its true clock speed all the time. This means that even with a technically slower clock it runs faster than an Intel.....
As for Palladium IIRC AMD have signed up for it aswell...leaving only Crusoe....but I cant remember where I read that info....

The difference is that AMD is planning to leave it up to the user to activate Palladium, like they've left it up to the user about overclocking. At least, that's what I recall.

Shep is right. The heat tolerance of an AMD chipset is literally the flip of the switch, I've seen it before. My friend and I use to work for a computer store, and he failed to attach the heatsink correctly, the AMD was fried in about 1 - 1.5 seconds after the power was turned on.

Yup, and he learned that lesson very well. In fact he has become fanatical about it. (Thank god we were able to return it and get a new one free from our supplier)
As for the motherboards, that is people screwing up. There may be a few defects but for the most part that is people screwing up, not putting screws in where they need to be.
Same goes for processors and heat sinks and fans....

As for the motherboards, that is people screwing up. There may be a few defects but for the most part that is people screwing up, not putting screws in where they need to be.
Most of the time, it is people screwing up....the fans do work and if you buy the right one, the computer will last for the best part of ten years (replacing the fan, the only moving part every couple of years), if you fit something wrong to start with....you will end up with nothing but fuckups to follow that...hell even the professional engineers aren't all that efficent at fitting stuff, they are in it for the per hour lump sum and believe me when I say they'll draw out as many hours as they can

My old AMD 166MHz and then 355MHz chips were great. The PC I have at uni is a 1.7GHz Pentium 4 and is smooth as anything (may need more RAM though).
But the custom built AMD 1800+ that my bro has at home needs enough power for the cooling fan to make gas turbines seem tame, it's so fucking noisy! Maybe it's just the fan type, but that thing I could not have in my room and leave overnight if I wanted sleep.

Everything is going great, I'm getting lots of hours and pulling in around $900 - $1000 dollars every other week (yeah I know that isn't a lot to some of you).
We were encouraged to carry on conversations with the companies clients while out on a job, I did have a conversation and happened to mentioned my religious standing(athiest, yes it was a stupid move). I live in Utah, and I'm sure you know what Utah is famous for at least as far as religion is concerned. Well after that conversation my work load dropped by 90% because 90% of my work load was for an entire county, I was told that they didn't want me around anymore.....I'm sure you can guess why. Fuckers..

You can get all sorts of coolers...the noise depends entirely on the make and model of fan used....they are all different.
