This is downright frightening. Fred Phelps is a cuddly teddy-bear compared to some people.Dan Savage wrote:That question is answered on this website. Jeff Owens "is a man of great expression, compassion, and wisdom," who currently leads the Shenandoah Bible Baptist Church, "one of America's most exciting churches," a church located in a part of West Virginia that serves as a suburb of Washington D.C. Pastor Owens is "a soulwinner, fervent preacher, and takes an uncompromising stand against sin; but the hallmark quality of Dr. Owens is his genuine love and concern for people." In this sermon Pastor Owens lovingly and compassionately calls on his flock to terrorize and murder gays and lesbians:
VIDEO HERE. -sketerpot
We need to stop burning flags and start burning fags. We need hunt-a-homo week. We need to take 'em all out and shoot 'em with a scatter shotgun: that's Christian compassion for you all right. Now for all you moderate Christians offended by this sort of thing—by Owens' sermon, by my posting about it—if you want to tell anyone that Owens doesn't speak for all Christians, go tell Owens. I'm sick of hearing it, frankly, and Owens needs to hear it. And you can reach Pastor Compassion at...

PHONE: 304-263-3461
FAX: 304-263-0151
Listen to that sermon again—listen to Pastor Owens crank up his congregation, listen to Jesus's followers scream and cheer when their loving, compassionate pastor encourages them to get out there and murder gays and lesbians. That's the kind of rally—so Nuremburgish—that gets innocent people killed. Listen to that sermon again. And then give the vile piece of shit a call: 304-263-3461.
UPDATE 2: The YouTube video of Pastor Owens urging his flock to get out there and commit hate crimes—murder is a hate crime, right?—has been yanked. Hopefully someone dubbed it. The quotes above are verbatim, and not "taken out of context." I don't know how you could put "we need to stop burning flags and start burning fags" in a context that makes it less of an incitement to commit a hate crime. Also: in the deleted clip Pastor Owens used some of the same language and arguments he made in his sodomy sermon: we need to shove this sin back in the closet, gay people wouldn't be coming out at all if more Christians stood up to them.
Because, hey, when was the last time Christians stood up to the gays anyway. We've been getting a free pass from the Christians for, oh, the last two thousand or so years, right?

Yes, there are people who openly advocate mass murder, and draw cheering crowds to listen to them. The YouTube video got taken down (apparently it's against the YouTube rules to incite murder), but there's a mirror on Vimeo. It's less than a minute long, but it was hard to listen to.

Why, that would be religious persecution!Alyrium Denryle wrote:Why is this person not behind bars? Inciting to murder is last I checked, a crime.
After all, the bible advocates the very same thing, and it is a religious book! Therefore everyone is allowed to follow it as they wish.
Or something like that

This is no surprise really. I've often said it before, but the kind of people who fervently follow that kind of shit are at their core no different than the same fuckers involved with the Inquisition, the Witch Trials and burnings, etc.
They're nothing but subhuman scum.

Homosexuality is not meaningfully damaging to anyone and is an act conducted among consenting adults. Prosecuting adults for harmless acts they conduct among themselves IS harmful. It's not remotely comparable, so don't even start patting yourself on the back yet for your color-by-numbers dogmatic cultural plurality.

Well, they DO betray a lack of empathy for their fellow humans. They demonstrate that they are incapable of rational tought.Zed wrote:And you're committing a Straw Man Fallacy. Both are things most humans posess. You could argue that the lack of these and other traits makes them "less human".
However, that is no what anyone claimed.
They ARE subhuman scum for these reasons - but that is an expression to express the disgust with which we (Temunjin, i, others) despise those people.
Now you go and claim that "you have them, therefore you are no better than them". Great, by that logic i am no better than a murderer if i hate a murderer (or kill him in self-defense). Or no better than a nazi when i despise him for being a nazi.
Either you are uneducated or ignorant about humanist morality and rational tought, you are incapable to grasp differing degrees of anything or you never had to deal with being discriminated against.
So, what's the difference between me despising the radical and the radical preaching hate against me?
It's quite simple, really:
The radical objects against me because of who i am and what i do in privat. None of my actions affect him directly.
I object against the radical because he preaches harm against me or treats me worse than others. Both actions (potentially) affect me directly - negatively.
Now, a common line of argument is that "well, the gays (or whomever) affect me, since i have to see them etc.".
That's simply a standard that can be applied to everyone - are you also offended by other religions? Well, such radicals propably are - but they have learned that they won't gain much by preaching the same hate against them.
Many radical go further and make up all kinds of supposed evils that happen due to gays (or other groups).
They claim that gays are more likely to be child molesters, that their lifestly is unhealthy etc (ironically, being burned to death also tends to be quite detremential to ones health - but i disgress).
The difference here is that we can show that radical beliefes have an adverse effect on society - such as the utter lack of healthcare in the USA resulting from then, or the incredibly high murder rate against transsexuals.
On the other hand, there is simply no evidence that gay behaviour has any adverse effect on society - you can see it in most european countries.
Unfortunately, golden meaners like yourself are often utterly incapable to grasp such things as evidence.
You actually tend to support some of the radicals arguments - you know, stuff as "teach both creationism and evolution".
You discard rational tought for trying not to offend anyone. You put as much tought in your arguments as republicards and fundies.

Though I like to limit myself from going "Only in America/Americans are idiots/scum" etc I do think this is sadly all too American. When you let the fundamentalist elements of religion off with nothing but a slap on the wrist or with no penalty at all, this sort of thing is to be expected. Such hatred is obviously a deadly toxin in society and I hope nothing really comes of this in general.
Though this is a good time to ask if the 1st amendment really protects this or weather people just don't care/support this behaviour?

They were not acting Christian at best and at worst they were not Christian at all. For the Bible says: "Let who is without sin cast the first stone." Whats this then:
Lev. 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them"
