Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever." Love, Wendy
What the fuck, God. Stop killing musicians I like.
Also, I'm shocked as Hell Ozzy outlived Dio.
When the histories are written, I'll bet that the Old Right and the New Left are put down as having a lot in common and that the people in the middle will be the enemy.

Americans see the Establishment center as an empty, decaying void that commands neither their confidence nor their love. It was not the American worker who designed the war or our military machine. It was the establishment wise men, the academicians of the center.

As naff as I found his music, I thought he was absolutely fantastic as a figurehead of metal and general dude. R.I.P. tiny metal mang.

This saddens me to no end. DIO was/is one of my favorite singers with a voice for metal that cannot be replaced.
The little big man of metal is gone. His music will live forever. Long live rock'n'roll!!! Long live DIO!!!

If I'd been told "make a list of celebrities whose deaths would really touch you" I wouldn't have thought to put Dio on there, but DAMN. I'm listening to Rainbow in the Dark with a big lump in my throat.
He was one of my favorites. I grew on his music in the eighties.
One of the things I loved about him was he wasn't just a great singer, he was very intelligent and articulate when being interviewed or otherwise discussing a topic, and always had something wise to say.
Edit: I should add that in that he always seemed like an elder statesman for the metal community.
RIP.

While I was born in 85, and thus can't say I grew up with his music, I have to say I appreciate what he did to the genre and find his music to be of very high caliber.
He will be missed.

Like all good men Ronnie James Dio died too soon. He really helped to bring metal into the limelight and were among the best ambassadors that fans of the genre could have asked for. For both his music and his nature he will be missed.
School requires more work than I remember it taking...
I got to see Ronnie perform in 08 with Heaven and Hell. It was magical to say the least. Ride that tiger across the Rainbow bridge to Vahlalla Ronnie. For your metal shall live on forever. \M/

I don't think the Italian (and theoretically Catholic) Ronald James Padavona is likely to be crossing the Bifrost Bridge anytime soon...
In Brazil they say that Pele was the best, but Garrincha was better
I'm on a tour de Dio all day now, working through Dio, Elf, Rainbow, Sabbath and Heaven & Hell albums... and god damn, it's so fucking sad. 67 isn't that old, and he really didn't deserve to die that soon.

Hear, hear! Was listening to a variety of his hits at work today. It's pretty bittersweet, I get all pumped up, but also kinda bummed out.

Being Dio is one of the true Metal Gods, I think he can go anywhere he bloody well wants to.

Considering that Dio is like 10 years older than Ozzy and was heaps more competent and coherent right up until his deathbed, I maintain that it's still an unfair comparison... for Ozzy.

True but Valhalla is the most Metal afterlife I can think of and as it has been said, Dio will go to whatever afterlife he damn well pleases.

I've said this elsewhere, but I don't mind saying it here, too:
I remember driving my companions crazy on a SCUBA trip to Cozumel. We had gone on a night dive and afterward I wouldn't stop humming Holy Diver.
Holy Diver! You've been down too long in the midnight sea.

Dio's passing is a loss. I remember him fronting Black Sabbath when they last toured downunder. Even earlier I remember when Richie Blackmore's Rainbow first came out.
RIP
Rather than Valhalla I can imagine the departed metal heroes lounging on couches, drinking and smoking and telling stories.
What wrong with these fuckers? Not enough soldiers funerals to keep them busy.
Do we know how big their planning the memorial service to be? All I get on Google searches are more crap about Phelps and Company.

I'm not sure how big it'll be, but if you're in the area it'll be at 2 PM, May 30th at 6300 Forest Lawn Drive in LA. Anyone who keeps those fuckers well and away from the funeral and can demonstrate they did so can count on a beer or something from me, come hell or high water.
I realize they don't care, but Dio did more for his fellow man through the Hear 'n' Aid and Children of the Night charity efforts than the Phelps clan could hope to achieve.
