Solid nitroglycerin was just his most famous invention, he also did alot of work creating rubber, atifical silk and other things. I seem to recall he lost a brother during their research. I really don't see him as a arms merchant anymore than the people that helped research atomic weapons.

*Deep Breath*

The way I see it, Bono does do a lot of work for various causes - whether its from the good of his heart or because he has a huge ego is open to debate.

Its a flavour of the month thing...like all those anti-war marches tht happened the other day...

Okay, I live in Ireland, its a nice place...over 100,000 people marched in Dublin proclaiming about the evil US and all that jazz...

Right heres the thing that bugged me...these people would get off their arses and march about a potential conflict in a far off land that many of them (eg the majority) do not understand. But if the IRA blow up a house in the North or something they do nothing except bitch...

Its so fake....and urrghh...it annoys me that the anti-war group are using flavour of the month tactics to stop a military action that has the possibility of making the world a safer place.

And don't even get me started on those tits blockading Shannon airport because it allows US planes to refuel...

They say Irelands neutral, we're neutral...like shite we are, point out a neutral country and ill show you a people who want to bury their heads in the sand and pretend the world doesn't exist.

Okay rant over...didn't mean to hyjack or anything...

Why do you say that?
Because she was an insane, domineering bitch who used the money given to her not to build hospitals or provide healthcare to the sick, but to set up more nunneries and let her little empire grow. Check out this article, written by the former financial book keeper of the Missionaries of Charity.

Here's a site run by a Calcutta resident, who's written a book on the Mother Teresa Myth and has some sample chapters up on his website.

And here's an interview with Christopher Hitchens, author of The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and in Practice, a book which skewered the Mother Teresa myth.

Erm, what has Bono done except donate money and give a few concerts to charity? Granted, he's helped, but I don't think he's done enough to quallify...

Hell, if they nominate Bono, they should nominate Bill Gates; after all, look at all that stuff he donated.

The Nobel Peace Prize became irrelevant when Yasser Arafat won it. Without trying to reopen that whole Israeli/Palestinian debate again, I have to say, even if the Israeli's are just as in the wrong as the Palestinians, a man like Yasser Arafat deserves the prize only slightly less than Osama Bin Laden.

We can thus put the Nobel Peace Prize right up there with the UN (which recently named Iraq to chair a disarmament conference :!: :?: , with Iran as co-chair, and Libya to head it's Human Rights Commission :!: :?: ) as something which may once have had some moral authority, but has now become, quite literally, a sick joke.

To be fair they pass those chairmenships around by the alphabet, but in this case they should have seriously thought it through and passed over these fokes

He invented TNT in order to help construction work. He actually dreamt up the Nobel Prizes after seeing his obituary when his brother died and the local newspaper thought it was him. When he read that he was most famous for inventing the weapon that was the most destructive in the world, he decided he didn't want his family's name to be synonymous with destruction. Nobel was a pacifist who had not realized how vital dynamite and nitroglycerin were to modern militaries. To claim him as "an enormously successful arms dealer," while it may be accurate from a purely historical point of view, slanders the man's morals viciously from the biographical understanding point of view. Indeed, he had actually hoped the power of his explosives would convince humanity of how futile war was. Unfortunately, he was too naive and trusting in human goodness.

[edit] And by the way, a large part of his fortune came from his holdings in his brothers' oil fields in Baku, Russia. Not all of it was from dynamite, and much of the dynamite went to construction.

Not all of them. Libya was elected to chair the human rights commission by a 33-3 vote, with 7 European countries abstaining.

And people onder why Americans distrust the UN.

So because a charity loving singer gets a peace prize it means that all Nobel prizes are unwarranted?

I think that's fucked up logic, I aim to get a prize in science one day maybe, I can dream.

Well you have to remember that no one can actually bring about world peace, so the prize can only go to those who really show their true colours by helping the world unify. I can't judge others on this however.

Actually, they bore guilt for that their whole lives. Nobel did too; why do you think he created the prize? It was to assuage his guilt.
