Airline travel with a notebook

Post by [R_H] »

What do I need to know about travelling by air with a notebook? What do you do when you go to the washroom (in the plane), for example? Do you lock your computer bag?

Thanks

What, you mean, on an airplane?

Nobody will steal it, they're surrounded by like 10 witnesses, and if you report it stolen it's not like they can slip off the plane--they'll probably call the ground cops and not let anyone off until they find it. You can also take it with you, which is what I'd do. I'd also recommend not using the airplane bathroom, but that's just me.

I've done quite a bit of air travel and haven't worried about people trying to steal large pieces of hardware when you're in business class. If this is an overnight flight and you wanted to work when everyone's asleep and then sneak off to the bathroom while sitting next to Snidely Whiplash, sure, lock it into the bag.

You can just put it away in your carry-on and tuck it under the seat to make sure it won't fly off the tray, no need to lock it up. These aren't TSA workers we're talking about, after all. Unless it's a long flight or something I try to make sure I won't have to use the bathroom during the flight itself because trying to climb over people is annoying, but I've never had any problems when flying economy.

Yeah those airliner bathrooms aren't too roomy. I'm in economy class, and I'll be flying during the day (coming back I'll be flying overnight).

It's a 17" notebook, in the carrying bag it wouldn't fit in my backpack. :P It's an 8hr flight, so I'll probably be needing to use the washroom during that time.

A 17" notebook? Pfft, you'll be fine. You could leave it sitting on your seat and nobody would touch it, because where would they stash the damn thing?

I like to take my notebook with me to the bathroom so I can doodle while I drop a deuce.

Oh, laptop? Yeah man where is anyone going to hide the thing?

"Excuse me sir, that's my laptop."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Yeah, it's got my name on the log in screen and my picture on the desktop. Unless you're secretly my number 1 fan..."

This is why I have an old floppy sticker on the top of my netbook, with my name, phone number, address, etc.

I mean, its not like I will actually use those on floppies or anything.

For the reasons Covenant explained, you shouldn't worry too much, although I have the personal policy of not tempting people by offering targets for impulse theft.

Hiding it from view should be enough, it is easy to quickly pick up something that's within reach, it is something different to rummage through someone's bag.

Fatties. They could stash notebooks in their asscracks and/or in their flab wings.

I guess I'll just stash my carry-on bags under the seat in front (like I always do).
