Quantum Communication?
I found this a few minutes ago, and I thought people on the board might be interested...

Kinda makes me wish I'd picked a physics major instead of CS. Stuff like this is fascinating.

"Where are you playing from?"
"The moon."
"Aw, geez, that DOES suck."
...or something like that.

I've been attemting to write SF that uses this tech...it's a great comunication device because we can _do it_ and may be able to make it useful...

There are a bunch of Sci-fi books which employ quantum entanglement for FTL communications... I think the Ender's Game series did so as well.paladin wrote:There was a sci-fi book series called "WarStrider" that used a similiar techique for long distance communication.Cap'n Hector wrote:I've been attemting to write SF that uses this tech...it's a great comunication device because we can _do it_ and may be able to make it useful...

I think you all need o realise that teleportation of information occurs at c.
Also, you must remember that entanglement requires the particles to be entangled together and once you unentangle them, thats it. So if you can only transmit through a particle once, then you need one particle per bit. Downloading an mp3? be prepared to pay thousands for the entangled particles.
Thats also assuming that entanglement is real. it still sounds like bullshit. "if you entangle two particles then seperate them, if you look at one, the other is the opposite!" thats like saying "if you flip a coin and look at one side, the other side will be the opposite!" well no shit. its not as if you changed anything, you just discovered the state and counterstate through assumption. But if it is real.. well then you gotta figure out how to control it.

LOL. You'd be seeing stuff before it took place. Even the admin would be jealous.3rd Impact wrote: FFS! I can't believe -40 is the lowest this POS connection can go!

More practical is unbreakable encryption for syncronized generation of random numbers, for use in a one-time pad. The key (one of the entangled particles) would only have to be physically transferred once.

They did this in the His Dark Materials series. They made a lodestone "telegraph" that could communicate with other people in another universe, and given that radio signals can't go through the subtle knife's holes, this is a feat of quantum comms. They were also small enough for 12 inch tall people to carry about.paladin wrote:There was a sci-fi book series called "WarStrider" that used a similiar techique for long distance communication.Cap'n Hector wrote:I've been attemting to write SF that uses this tech...it's a great comunication device because we can _do it_ and may be able to make it useful...
