I think the characters are just fantastically ugly and poorly animated; I don't think that's deliberate. Wake's constant monotone monologuing is key to the 'terror' and yet it's awful.

Wake looks good but his wife is some kind of bizarre, inhuman monstrosity. They could have made the game 100x more terrifying if they'd just animated all of the characters like her instead of bothering with all this dark presence shit.
