Recommendations for Dawn of War Mods

Post by Stravo »

I've run some simple Google searches for Dawn of War mods and none of them really seem to move me to want to load them up. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good mod for Dawn of War (any one of the games be they Soulstorm, Dark Crusade or Winter Assault) I'm particularly interested in mods that change up game play or add a brand new faction (well done not like some mods that use existing models for some factions to stand in for Tyranids for example) I don't want mods that just "rebalance" or make the game harder. I want to have fun with new ways of playing the game or new settings. My Holy Grail would be a very well done Horus Heresy era mod.

Let me know what you recommend. Thanks.
Wherever you go, there you are.

Being a member of the DOW moding community let me suggest that you look up this place.
RelicNews Forums > RDN - Relic Game Mods > Dawn of War

Many of the best mods are still in beta stages but the mods in progress/completed mods sections should give you the basics. Work is currently underway for mods for each of the major Space Marine and Chaos legions as well as additional factions.

Since I am in the beta teams I don't know how many of them are public or non public beta but don't be scared of beta builds as they are usually mostly completed save for balancing issues. For example, the Thousand Sons mod is in the stage where all that needs to be done is the voice acting.

Also, many of the mods that advertise not adding new factions still radically change gamplay. Examples include completely working over the major factions, changing more than 50% of the units and completely turning the game on its head.

My favorite is SS Legions. It does not add any new faction but it completely remaps all the existing ones. Not a single unit is such as it is in the original game and many new units have been added.

So while it might seem as only rebalancing it definitively feels like a completely different game altogether.
It has become clear to me in the previous days that any attempts at reconciliation and explanation with the community here has failed. I have tried my best. I really have. I pored my heart out trying. But it was all for nothing.

You win. There, I have said it.

Now there is only one thing left to do. Let us see if I can sum up the strength needed to end things once and for all.

Depends on what game you have. If you have Dark Crusade or Soul Storm, I highly recommend the Firestorm over Kronus/Karuava due to the fact that they are essentially the closest you will get to the codexes (Imperial Guard Army = 9 RUSS!!!!!!)

otherwise if you are looking for it to be closer to the table top itself, there is the TTRU mod (Table Top Round Up) where on a certain map, if you hold a certain point long enough you can field your factions particular mech (ie: Imperials get a Scout Titan etc, etc)

I didn't mind the Firestorm/Closer to codex mods from a gameplay standpoint, just need to get used to vehicles can't be hurt by standard small arms, they up unit size and stuff like that too so to me makes for bigger scope of battle fun. Try to get an AI mod for skirmish play, hate putting stuff on hard just to get over retarded AI.

I'm not a big fan of FoK, simply because they nerf'd mah strategy for Guard... Anywho, that doesn't matter.

FoK is really well done, and if you have SoulStorm there's a mod that gives you back the original Imp Guard General.

I liked the Annihilation mod. Good installer, fairly balanced units, and no crazy shenanigans like a 200-unit limit.
