I think they did too (in fact, I know they did, just listening to the wild laughter from some of the more famous jokes), but I think they also ran a laugh track. Laugh tracks don't sound exactly like real people laughing--it's too uniform, it sounds like everyone is laughing exactly the way people are expected to laugh. I swear I hear laugh tracks in Seinfeld, though I also have heard the audience laughing.

Just a interesting piece of trivia:

I Love Lucy did not employ a laugh track. All the laughs on that show came from an audience who watching a playback of the show. But alot of the laughtracks come from the recorded laughs on I Love Lucy.
