EVE is not a game of linear progression where smaller/cheaper stuff gets totally worthless once you get the skills to fly bigger/more expensive stuff. Most ships have their niche and remain useful.
This cannot be overstated enough.

Eh, that's half right. It doesn't take much time at all to get the standings to do L2s, and the isk from L1s is absolute balls. Get yourself to L2s and a cruiser once you can even half-assed fly it and you'll make significantly more isk. Just be careful with it, and remember, L2s just about never have warp scrams in them, so if you get in over your head, you can always bug out.

The lack-of-progression comment does apply in PVP though, just not so much in PVE. :)

I started about two months ago now, and its taken me a fair while to get anywhere, ISK wise. Currently flying a BC on level 3's,. and already there has been a massive increase in ISK from the missions and salvage wise. Worship at the alter of the T-bars and armour plates ;) I tend to head over to Jita to get the best prices, although Dodoxie has proved to have decent prices as well. And it is quite fun just watching the exit points at Jita stations.....its hypnotic.

My corp recently got war-decced for no apparent reason (should be ended today) its been a right bugger of a war, since we hardly have any "old" players, and they have a good dozen or so 2005/6'ers flying around, one in TERRIBLE TENGU!!! I learnt quickly to start flying things that were cheap and speedy, hehe.

Heh, yeah, I realised that getting access to level 2s indeed doesn't take that long. I'm just trying to repair some of my terrible, terrible Amarr standings right now with some level 1 grinding, and it's taking ages :D

Oh yeah, there's a good hint right there: decline missions against one of the major factions. Over time they will rape your standings against that faction, and it never hurts to have decent standings all over the universe if you ever want to move.

That's especially true if you ever want to get into wormhole exploration. You never know whose space you'll get dumped into through an exit wormhole, and it sucks ass to have the faction navies jumping your bones the instant you exit.

I would like to expand on the 'don't trust people on eve' to Don't trust people in Eve, or even people from here on Stardestroyer.net. I've seen at least one of our forum members attempting to scam people right here out of in-game money. Also, I'm pretty new to the game too and am in a mostly new player corp. Send me a pm if you looking for a corp to join.

To reinforce this, currently me and some corpmates are living in a wormhole. Today some random hapless asshole decide to ask in the WH local for help with a way out because he was an idiot and forgot to pack scan probes for his probe launcher (all he had according to the killmail was combat probes). So we said "Sure, we'll help you out. let me form a fleet with you and you can warp to me at the wormhole". Only when he warped to me he warped to me and a pair of my bros in PvP boats ready to warp/scram and pew pew his ass to death. The last thing he read in local before being forcibly clone-jumped back to where ever he lived in real space was "Here's your way back!"

EVE is an unfriendly place and there are some of us out there that would rather pod kill you than take the time to say hello. Don't pad someone else's killboard stats, fly smart, fly safe. Find a good corp of like minded people and work in groups, you try to lone wolf it in EVE and you're going to hate it and go back to playing WoW or something.

ProTip: Stay the hell out of wormholes until you have at least some clue of what the hell it is you're doing in EVE or a friend that knows their way is around to teach you.

My own personal policy is that I won't fuck you over if I know you (and don't hate you), but otherwise you're fair game. Tactical deceptions aside, if I'm going to stab you in the back, I have the courtesy to do it to your face.

EVE has always been depressing to me, mainly due to every corp I ever joined (okay, well, 3) being war-decced into oblivion and it's not like 10 or so people can stand up to professional war-bastards-for-hire.
Maybe I just had bad luck or maybe all my CEOs just happened to be idiots with an uncanny ability to piss off the big guys, but still. I invariably end up drifting on my own again watching others have all the fun, alas.

Not entirely sure I agree with the "Dont trust anyone!" thing, I found my corp after athe CEO came and helped with the last SoE mission, and the entire group seems to have bonded pretty well, and will always help out when asked. You do get the odd spy, but they tend to be fairly easy to sniff out.

I don't get why people say that this game is for 'mature people.' Sure the game is a lot more deeper than most other games, but the players I've found to have a lot more trolls and douche bags. I decided to look up the demographics for the 'mature' eve players vs the 'kiddie' wow players and lo and behold, the average wow player is a couple years older than the eve player.

Yeah, I don't get the "mature" part either, unless people mean that you have to be old enough to understand and be able to use the UI ;) Maybe it's referring to the fact that you'll enjoy EVE a lot more if you have a thick hide.

Or maybe it's just padding yourself on the shoulder for playing a game without huge shoulder armor and cartoony, colorful graphics.

Alliance Tournament

It's like football for nerds who like internet spaceships. Also, Hydra got one of their team members banned from the tournament for anchoring warp bubbles in Jove space. Don't quote me on it, but rumor has it it was Hydra's FC that got canned.

As far as beginners go, I have a few pointers.

Caldari are great for PvE, but if you want to move into PvP...either accept the fact that you are going to be an ECM Pilot or crosstrain another race.

and on that topic...

Gallente have a few really good ships, but in my opinion are a bit lackluster. The Myrmidon and it's big brother the Dominix are excellent PvE ships that you can stack full of drones to suit many missions.

Amarr have very nice looking ships, usually golden and sleek. Their frigates aren't much to get excited for, the Punisher is tough but they lack enough mid-slots to really shine. In the cruiser department the Arbitator is an excellent drone boat, but it's brethren the Maller is only used as a bait ship, the Omen can be decent but isn't easy to fit. The Harbinger is their Teir 2 battlecruiser and is a popular ship. I think the real gem of the Amarr is their battleship line-up as it is arguably the best of any of the races, notably their Apocalypse which is a natural sniper ship and the Abaddon which features both resistance and damage bonuses.

Minmatar are the most skill-intensive race but it can pay off. Their T1 frigates are out there, but I don't see much of any of them except for the Rifter, which many consider the best frigate in the game. The Thrasher is likewise considered the premiere destroyer, like many other minmatar ships it has good firepower and a versatile slot layout. The cruiser department includes the sturdy Rupture and the quick Stabber, the former being more useful I find. Their battlecruiser's include the Hurricane which is a tourney favorite and has a good reputation as a solid ship. I am not overly impressed by their battleships but they aren't bad either.

Work to get T2 versions of your equipment, they are harder to fit but the advantages in price and effectiveness are worth it. T2 guns might 'look' like they are worse than their meta 4 counterparts, however one you factor in the specialization skills and T2 ammunition, they are far superior.

Ah yes, accept the fact that as a Caldari-focused pilot in PVP you're stuck being an ECM pilot or a shield-rep pilot or an absolutely brutal battlecruiser pilot or the Death Sentence to Dramiels, and that's just in T1 ships. The only reason they don't have a 'good' frigate is that the Rifter's obscenely good, and their DPS battleship packs a punch in small fleets (where missile flight time doesn't cripple you). Honestly, I love the anti-Caldari prejudice that's so common out there, it makes people underestimate me. :)

Sorry to disagree White Haven, but if I showed up to a battleship fleet with a missile boat, I would get removed from the fleet. I am not exagerrating this point, not would I be kicked from the fleet I would expect to be singled out in a forum posting.

All else being equal instant damage beats delayed damage.

That'd be why I mentioned battleships only in the context of small gangs, and only as a 'can work in certain circumstances.' It's cute, though, how you only address the Raven, really. :)

Did I address the Raven? I don't recall referring to a Raven at any point.
I could have easily been referring to a Scorpion or a Typhoon fitted with cruise missiles.

One could show up to a BS fleet with a Rokh, but then your that odd duck that needs shield logistics and everyone else is armor tanking.

Which brings up the second issue with Caldari, they are shield tankers. Minmatar 'can' shield tank but they can also armor tank also. Amarr and Gallente are also armor tankers, which leaves the Caldari the aforementioned 'odd duck'.

But I digress White Haven, if you enjoy playing Caldari then go for it. They aren't a completely lost cause their ECM boats (Falcon mainly) for instance are godly.

I was more referring to the fact that you only seen to be addressing battleships and large fleets. There's more to EVE than either of those. :)
As a corollary, I fly more or less anyone's ships, but it always amuses me to see Caldari denigrated. It particularly sent me into giggle-fits when I used to see CVA do it while being shitcanned by Russian Drake fleets. :)

Caldari missile boats don't work in fleet on fleet combat because sniper battleship duels take place at ranges where even cruise missiles will never reach the target before they tac-warp out of range to another CovOps bookmark.

A small gang is a different story entirely. When people say fleet action, they mean the large battleship engagement, not your 20 chums roaming around. With that, you're unlikely to fight at ranges exceeding 50 km.

Not to me. To me PVP is three guys trying to make my Probe* slow down enough that they can blow it up and steal my stuff, while I'm flying at Ludicrous Speed towards a gate screaming "Not meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!" at my monitor.
