If they wanted to add complexity for no reason they'd just put in strategic interception silliness; having to guess vectors and scramble high speed interceptors ahead of the UFO instead of chasing it down. I really don't know why they think tactical combat is a good idea.
UFO's system is pretty easy to fix by just not making plasma guns huge range, high damage and high ammo.

Well he DOES phone up pilots and tell them things like 'close it up' and 'argh run away'.
In any case it isn't maths, because the lead time means the UFO will probably change course. You'd have to work out the mission and likely destination.
