True Blood is back! SPOILERS

Post by Faqa »

And *I*'m the first to create a thread? FOR SHAME!

Anyhoo, a much better episode than most of the second half of season 2. Mainly because there's no piece-of-shit Mary-Anne plot. Also, pluses for separating Bill and Sookie, as they're much less irritating that way. Well, Bill is, anyway.

Tara - god, that girl's a mess, for obvious reasons. I liked the way that what broke her was not Eggs' death, nor Sookie being a complete bitch to her(sorry, honey, but "Mah precious Beel has gawn all missin'" does not compare to "I just lost my first love and only real parental figure to horrific mind rape"), but rather two hours of non-stop preaching :lol:

Lafayette - yeah, this guy continues to rock. I don't know what Nelson Ellis is getting paid, but it ain't enough. It takes guts to call a female vampire who can rip out your throat in seconds "Hooker". And he... actually demonstrates normal fucking compassion, a rarity on this show.

Jessica = Awwwwww. I thought they'd take her the serial-killer route, but apparantly she remains a scared little girl, which seems more interesting.

As for Jason - automatic win for use of the term "pussy overflow". Although I was kind of getting used to competent-Jason, it's always funny to see Ryan Kwan play stupid. Although the threesome scene seemed to veer a bit too much into the realm of needless porn.

Sam - uh..... I think the writers realized his plotline looks dull to start with. Which is why we got the Scene Of A Thousand Slashfics. Dear me, they do love their female fangirls, don't they? Although I suppose it's fair enough, given how many half-naked females we get. Which brings us to....

Eric. Who, for those of us who are straight male and therefore not too enamoured with seeing Alexander Skaarsgard in the altogether.... did not have a whole lot to do, sort of sleepwalking through his scenes. Fortunately, he had Pam around to make up for it("Why is it people always think I CARE about THEIR problems?!").

And to end - Vampires vs Werewolves? Seriously? BAD Alan Ball. BAD. I wonder if this was an executive thing - "Do it like Twilight!".

Apparently, the books do some Vamp vs. Werewolf stuff at this point as well, so it's not quite that.

It's the permeation of the idea of Fang vs. Fur in the genre.

I like that they use actual wolves for it, though. Real wolves look real impressive.

I just hope it speaks to their animal-handling skills in Game Of Thrones.

Also, notice how that's one cliche of the genre Buffy managed to avoid? You had ONE werewolf, he was civilized and nice and I don't actually think he ever fought a vampire.

Actually, the Werewolf Oz and the vampire Angelus did meet once--and just growled at each other and backed away.

Ya know, like actual animals.

Angel did fight a werewolf once in his own series, trying to save a girl from being bit. He's not quick enough. He also goes on to bang the new werewolf girl. This did not lead to the creation of a master hybrid race though. Thankfully.

There's nothing inherently wrong with werewolf-vampire conflicts. The issue is that most of them are done in a way that fucking sucks or for no apparent reason beyond 'because we do'. Territorial conflicts seem to be one of the better ones, but supposedly True Blood werewolves are nomadic so that's not it.

Now, who else liked the 'I'm sorry you fell in love with a serial killer, but honestly, who here hasn't?' line from Arlene?

They aren't nomadic in the books, and they aren't in a war with vampires. There is some antagonism, but they aren't constantly fighting. They get along better than wolves and coyotes or lions and hyaenas.
Spoiler
If they are following the books, these are some thugs hired by the king of Mississippi at the suggestion of Bill's maker. Sookie will soon get heavily involved with the local werewolf pack, which is made up of nice, respectable members of the community. They get along alright with the local vampires as long as they don't get in each others' way.

Well, finally managed to see it. Eric was less impressive this time. Sookie actually made some smart moves this time, which is good. The Magister ruled, as always. Bill apparently is pretty good at getting away from chains. Andy was hilarious as always.

That said, nothing much to comment on else. I thought it pretty out-of-character for the Sheriff to just go "who cares" when earlier he seemed to pretty much accept "Vampire Bill".

The "Slash-scene" was hilarious, so was Jason's attempt at behaving "normal" - ("It's softer than it was before!").

I hope Sam's "quest for this parents" goes somewhere meaningfull. I also hope Sam won't be completely destroyed by whatever he will find... he deserves something good happening to him. But somehow I doubt that'll be the outcome.

What makes it even funnier is that in a way, in that town, it’s sort of true. :lol:

Accept” is not the word I would use. “Tolerate” and “being civil and polite to” would be. The Sherriff strikes me as the type wouldn’t needlessly antagonize someone who could be potentially dangerous unless it was necessary.

Bigotry, as much else, is a matter of degrees. The Sherriff might not hate vampires, but it looks like he doesn’t particularly care for them either. He won’t kill, hunt or harass a vampire living in his jurisdiction, but he won’t be bothered to look for him if he goes missing either.
Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.

I'm positive that the sound one of the werewolves made when getting an ear ripped off was identical the sound effect when you kill a wolve in warcraft 3.

Holy....

don't ever mess with Bill Compton when Sookie is not around to play "moderating influence". Seriously, that guy is hardcore. Take away Sookie and he rips of ears, sets people on fire and generally acts much more...aggressive.

And that is pretty much all I have to say about this episode. I could say that I found Tara and Lafayette interesting, but I can barely stand Tara. Lafayette makes up for that mostly, but so far I am still not sure what function they currently serve in the story. That said, Andy and Jason are developing quite the father/son bond.

Honestly, I've always found Bill and Sookie to be better characters when they're not together. The chemistry there is just so fucking flat that it's kind of painful - makes you wonder what their real relationship is like. I mean, Bill's always 'AH SPEAK IN CAPS' and incredibly lame, but on his own it's more goofy lame than eyerollingly so. Sookie's the same.

I actually do not mind them together, they do make quite a nice team IMO. See Maenead stuff etc.

So I just finished watching the latest episode, thanks to the usual delays in getting hold of it here in Aus.

-Apparently the power dynamic in True Blood is Vampires > Werewolves, at least if the vampire is at full strength. Normally it's the other way around.

-Silver doors for imprisoning a vampire is an interesting concept. However, it is worthless for anything more than a 'We're serious about this' constraint, because the speed True Blood vampires exhibit, when coupled with anything solid enough, would be sufficient to demolish a wall or knock the door off the hinges. Having the guards there though serves as a better restraint than the door alone - sure, you can demolish the wall if you have an hour or two, but by that point they'll have come in and whupped you, so as a dual system it works.

-I continue to fucking love Terry. The man has a goddamn armadillo! Also, Jessica. Somehow she seems even cuter when she's disposing of a body, but that could just be my inner serial killer talking.

-It's good seeing James Frain return to the swamp. He was in Invasion, which was the best damn TV show about an alien invasion I have ever seen. It was in Florida's everglades, but hey, close enough.

It was very underwhelming to the point of being in the ad episode category.

The previews of the next episode also look to be odd at best. The direction they are taking the characters seem to be 180 degrees away from what I was expecting.

Hopefully they are just setting up for a larger plot point but as of now I am not too impressed with the direction they are taking the show.

Not really a murder, since Lorena was still alive even after that. Creepy shit, though.

I like the idea of Vampires having 'fixers'. I'm pretty sure this one is a Big Bad and not indicative of an actual role, but the concept of them having people wandering who's job is to take care of little incidents and handle things like information gathering is a nice one.

For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see,
Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be;
Saw the heavens fill with commerce, argosies of magic sails,
Pilots of the purple twilight dropping down with costly bales;
Heard the heavens fill with shouting, and there rain'd a ghastly dew
From the nations' airy navies grappling in the central blue;
