Mutant Registration
Okay, it was late, and I was watching X-Men, and had a thought which might make for interesting discussion here.
Let's say it's the year 2020 or somesuch, and people with strange genetic mutations have begun popping up (please, no comments on how blatantly unrealistic this is...we know. ). People who can walk through walls, or toss cars around like toys, or even view and alter the human mind. This becomes a big deal, and a certain U.S. Senator proposes a radical bill that would require all such 'mutants' to register themselves with the government.
Now, of course, the question is: where do you stand on this issue, and why?

Register them. They have powers above and beyond humanity, and if they turned to crime, what could we do?
This day is Fantastic!

possibly. my line of thinking is, we register people who's hands count as lethal weapons - count mutants the same way, becuase of their superior powers.
not discrimination, however. dont want to provoke em.

I thought that was a myth. But I don't think that registration at a national level like a Mutant Registration Bureau is a good idea.Enforcer Talen wrote:possibly. my line of thinking is, we register people who's hands count as lethal weapons - count mutants the same way, becuase of their superior powers.

nah. and why a national thing? Im not sure about hands counted as lethal weapons - I think it's true, but have no source. but even so, we register those with guns. many of the mutant powers are more deadly then a mere gun.

It deals with a similar topic. There are a bunch of kids that have superpowers and are raised by the government. Doesn't end well.Enforcer Talen wrote:nah.
The Mutant Registration Act was a national program right?and why a national thing?
I always heard it was a myth. I think it was mentioned here before. It isn't the same though. You have a choice whether to own a gun. You can't just not be a mutant. How long do you think before some bigot decides, hey let's break into Mutant registration, steal where all these mutants' addresses and let's go kill them all. Especially considering all the anti-mutant behavior in the comics.Im not sure about hands counted as lethal weapons - I think it's true, but have no source. but even so, we register those with guns. many of the mutant powers are more deadly then a mere gun.
Again, some control is necessary, but just registering their powers and whereabouts isn't enough.
Mutants need to be taught control themselves.

I know they didnt choose to, but now they have the powers, dont you think it should be known where they are? if you want to teach them responsibility, you have to have a list of names. as well, knowing a person with the power of manipulating metal is going onto a plane is almost neccessary, for the safety of the passengers.

Yes, and no. I agree with the point, but not the method.Enforcer Talen wrote:I know they didnt choose to, but now they have the powers, dont you think it should be known where they are?
I think a better solution is more similar to the way the Jedi find their kids. Testing at birth if possible or when powers emerge. Then they can go to special schools. But just mutant registrations sends the wrong message.if you want to teach them responsibility, you have to have a list of names. as well, knowing a person with the power of manipulating metal is going onto a plane is almost neccessary, for the safety of the passengers.

I don't favor gun registration laws, much less people registration laws- even if they are mutants.

I want you all to read the Ultimate X-Men comics and just see what happens to the Sentials. Also, registering them would not be a good idea. We saw how well that went with the MaCarthy hearings of the 60's. And, just to hammer the point in, I don't believe in gun registration so, of course, I don't believe that it should be done to mutants. It's on a case by case system for me.

By registering that information about you being a mutant is viewable to the public, not to mention police forces. That information can be a horrible detriment to the mutants life. Can you imagine being a mutant who can teleport, or walk through walls? You will be suspect in every burglary, kidnapping and mysterious crime in the immediate vicinity. Being a registered mutant can affect your getting a job, it can lead to hate crimes. No on seserves to be treated like that. A school that teaches the state curriculem(sp) as well as power control, then dealing with problem mutants on a case by case basis is the best solution.

You're required to register if you own a gun, and you are also required to register as someone who possesses a deadly weapon if you hold a black belt in any sort of martial art. It is only consistent to make mutants register, as well.

You called the last option the 'Squall Solution' so I had to vote for that.
But anyway.
The government should definitely keep track of these people, because each one alone could be a threat to national security. But making them come up and register is unnecessary. I'm sure they could covertly detect and record the existence of all of these people without actually interfering unless they become malignant.

Why has everyone become a Nazi? This is not just racism, but speciesism, at its finest.

The problem with this line of thinking, is that a person with a blackbelt wil not be hassled by the cops or denied emplyment because they hold a blackbelt. A mutant on the other hand....Durandal wrote:You're required to register if you own a gun, and you are also required to register as someone who possesses a deadly weapon if you hold a black belt in any sort of martial art. Also (according to my sensei), anyone with ANY belt other than the lowest within their art can be charged with aggravated battery if they get into a fight, rather than simple battery. Depending on the art and rank it becomes "with a deadly weapon." Which kinda sucks for me, since I just earned a belt today...time to be REALLY careful about getting pissed off.Durandal wrote:You're required to register if you own a gun, and you are also required to register as someone who possesses a deadly weapon if you hold a black belt in any sort of martial art.
