Massive heat wave strikes, Global warming no where in sight!

Post by Crossroads Inc. »

Live in the Northeast? Think twice before going outside today.

The National Weather Service issued a heat warning today for what it calls the "megalopolis" region, which includes New York City, Washington, D.C, Philadelphia and Boston. Areas in this region are expected to reach triple-digit temperatures. Officials advise for people to stay indoors and check on elderly relatives to avoid any heat-related illness.

Now that people are heading back to work after the long weekend, the blistering heat may push power usage to new heights. Consolidated Edison, New York City's power company, expects levels to break records set in 2006.

The National Weather Service also advises for people to avoid any "strenuous activities or work-outs." So the government wants us to just sit inside, glued to the air conditioner? NewsFeed can work with that.
Perhaps a massive heat wave isn't exactly "news" but what I find interesting is the response to it. As many know by now, every winter as snow blankets the country, Conservatives come out form every corner and go "Hur hur hur! Everything is cold! Where is your global warming now? Hur hur, Its all a bunch of lies!" They point, and laugh, and draw cartoons of people burning Global Warming reports to keep warm.

So what happens when summer comes around? Like all good Conservatives, they simply ignore it... What does it mater that summer temperatures continue to trend up form year to year? What does it matter that droughts across America grow larger and annual rainfall decreases? Whatever is causing it, surely it can't be Global Warming... Everyone knows thats a lie, just look at winter time!

Amusingly it's been raining for the last couple of days here, and we really don't get that much rain. (The skies are overcast at the moment and it's somewhat cool out; a couple weeks before this it was in the 90s+.)

That was to be expected. If the earth climate warms up, some regions will be getting the rain from the water that evaporates elsewhere. It's simple, what goes up in one place, must come down again, either there or elsewhere.
A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

In other news, the Climategate scandal was debunked and the CRU scientists exonerated by an independent review panel.

Don't expect to hear anything about it from the Right, though.

That's because all of those good conservatives live in California, where even a stint of rain or the slightly cool summer we have is enough to make them believe global warming is a big lie. :P

I'm in NH just north of the alleged heatwave I believe. Its been really fricking hot, but not heatpocalypse hot. The temperatures up here aren't even record breaking its jsut... hot...

I feel like that uber cold snap a few months ago was a better argument for "global warming" as the weather man noted we were getting airflow from Canada that was unusual because the jet stream was affected by melting glacial ice?

The current Conservative denial theory is sunspots. The sunspots are picking up a bit after a record stretch of spotless days, that's why it's suddenly hot right now.

Funny thing here: Whatever the reason, the fact is that temperatures are still climbing so clearly something should be done. But because to them the fault lies with a natural solar cycle and not human activity humanity shouldn't be obligated to try to save itself.

It's weird.

Funny. I just read an article in Answers magazine, the publication of Answers in Genesis, blaming global warming on sunspots. What do you know.

So - what is the response? Are they totally off their rockers, or is this an area of that is getting further research that they are latching onto because of uncertainties?

Climate models suggest more heat waves over next decades

by RANDOLPH E. SCHMID
updated 7/8/2010 4:27:16 PM ET

WASHINGTON — Folks sweating out the heat wave battering parts of the country may just have to get used to it.

As global warming continues such heat waves will be increasingly common in the future, a Stanford University study concludes.

"In the next 30 years, we could see an increase in heat waves like the one now occurring in the eastern United States or the kind that swept across Europe in 2003 that caused tens of thousands of fatalities," Noah Diffenbaugh, an assistant professor of environmental Earth system science at Stanford, said in a statement.

Diffenbaugh and Moetasim Ashfaq, a former Stanford postdoctoral fellow now at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, used a series of computer models of climate to calculate changes in the future with increased levels of carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere. Their findings are reported in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

They calculate that within 30 years average temperature could be 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, or 2 Celsius, higher than in the mid-1800s.

That level of increase has been reported by others and most atmospheric scientists expect it to lead to warming and a change in a variety of weather and climate conditions.

Diffenbaugh and Ashfaq focus specifically on heat waves over the United States.

They reported that an intense heat wave equal to the longest on record from 1951 to 1999 is likely to occur as many as five times between 2020 and 2029 over areas of the western and central United States.

In addition, they said the 2030s are projected to be even hotter.

"Occurrence of the longest historical heat wave further intensifies in the 2030-2039 period, including greater than five occurrences per decade over much of the western U.S. and greater than three exceedences per decade over much of the eastern U.S.," the researchers reported.

"I did not expect to see anything this large within the next three decades. This was definitely a surprise," Diffenbaugh said.

The research was funded by the Energy Department and the National Science Foundation. The climate model simulations were generated and analyzed at Purdue University.
Note the study-funders. They are not some advocacy groups. Just as it should be.

I spent today working in an unairconditioned house in 100f+ heat removing some ancient ass jute-back carpet sitting on I-shit-you-not fucking horsehair pad before laying down a couple of few hundred square yards of thick as fuck pattern match berber. It was so goddamned hot...

(cue everyone screaming "How hot was it?")

It was so goddamned hot I had to stand in the shower for half an hour with the nozzle aimed at my crotch just to get my nut sack to unstick from my left thigh. It was so goddamned hot I drank enough water the TVA is considering knocking down half a dozen dams on the Tennessee river just to make sure enough water gets past Huntsville so the poor fucks down stream can have some too.

If global warming isn't real then I guess there really is a god and he really is a giant sadistic eight year old with a great big fucking magnifying glass and we're the must unlucky pack of ants in the history of insects.

Seriously, it's fucking hot out there, kids. Drink some water and take plenty of rests in the shade if you gotta work in this shit, yo.

A lot of people don't seem to realize that the whole shebang is about greater extremes in both directions, not just warming. So Summers will grow hotter while winters will also get colder. They think the name of the theory is the whole meat of it, so that if it gets colder, it can't be true.

Of course, a few do think we're just in a 'typical warming trend', failing to realize the accellerated rise of the warming and the other associated effects that were not typical beforehand

The real problem with many conservatives is that honestly do not seem to care about the consequences of climate change... Only if its causes by man or not.

I remember overhearing a conversation in a hotel lobby a week or so back. Two guys in business suites were watching some report on CCN in the lobby about rising temperatures, and I walked in on.

"What they really don't want you all to know is that all of this is just a natural cycle. Sure the world is heating up, but its not caused by us, its just part of nature. Its all part of a big cycle and will eventually cool off again."

God I wanted to walk up and throttle the guy, but the suite he was wearing looked more then the monthly payments for my condo. I just wanted to shout.

"Who CARES who is causing it, its going to screw the world over! don't you want to do something to stop it even if it is a "natural" cycle?" Its like the ultimate cop out for conservatives "Natural" Its like those congressmen who said carbon dioxide wasn't harmful because its a "natural substance" or that the oil in the gulf would go away because its "natural" as well.

So yeah, when the upper midwest is frozen solid in ice, and the southern US is bone dry and virtually un-inhibitable 50 years from now, we'll see if these people still want to sit back and do nothing because "its natural"

I hate this heat. I'm glad the office and lab are A/C controlled, but my car ain't, and even though I have only a 7 minute journey home via motorway at speed, it's horrible sitting in a car at 35ºC.

Also:

This. Climate change would have been far better pushed as an increase in chaos via a heat engine effect, not the literally taken idea that everything must heat up and get dry and horrible, which won't be the case for all areas and seasons will still exist. Greater unpredictability and extreme weather is the game now, and we can see the last decade is chock full of freak events.

Check the Cryosphere Tale of the Ticker chart. The Arctic is basically melting butter on a griddle now. I very much doubt it will last another few summers like this.

I thought that the Global Warming deniers/questioners took the stance that 'how do we know that this not just a natural weather change/trend' or whatever.

The biggest thing is they don't want to admit it's caused by man with whatever preferred tactic they like, because then it means they might have to change their lifestyle.

Which is basically what I said in my earlier post.. It doesn't matter if the world really IS having its climate screwed over, or that ice caps really are melting, only that "They" didn't cause it.

If its not man made, then don't need to lift a finger ot do anything about.
