NEW YORK - Fox News Channel's Glenn Beck says he's been diagnosed with an eye disease that could eventually blind him. The conservative commentator told an audience attending his "American Revival" tour over the weekend in Salt Lake City that a doctor told him he has the degenerative disease macular dystrophy.

Beck says he went to a doctor for testing because he had trouble focusing with his eyes. "He said, `You have macular dystrophy. ... You could go blind in the next year. Or, you might not."

Beck said he replied: "Did you just charge me a thousand dollars for knowing what I knew my whole life?"

The disease generally makes itself known by a decrease in vision in 20- to 40-year-olds. Beck is 46. The WebMD website says eyesight deteriorates as the disease progresses.

I never thought that anything would ever get me to sympathize with Glenn FUCKING Beck. Every single poster above me has proven that assumption wrong. Losing any of your senses is horrible - much less hearing or sight.

Five years ago, I lost most of my sight in my left eye due to optic neuritis. This lasted for three months. The initial tests determined that I had abnormally small foveal cups ( ladies, the tinier the cups, the bigger the...ahem, I digress ).

How did it effect me, losing 50% of my vision for a mere three months?

More than you would think. I really can't describe it - but I will try.

When I first realized that the dark spot I had in my left eye was not due to my poor glasses hygiene, but was instead growing, I contacted a doctor. That night, at 10 pm. on a Saturday, I arranged to meet my optometrist at his office ( yeah, he is a great guy ). After running a number of tests and several consults, he determined the above diagnosis, and referred me to a neurologist, to test for the most common cause of optic neuritis, MS. Five years later, under the scrutiny of one of the top neurologists in the U.S., and neither Yeah nor Nay are forthcoming.

Loss of sight from even one eye makes things like driving or navigating hallways in low light nearly impossible...total blindness brings about a whole new - infinitely more difficult - way of life.

Laugh, mock, hate Beck for his views and behavior, but not for this, if it's true.

You can live without seeing, and when you are as rich as he is you can live very well indeed.

It's not a good life, but then he's never done anything to deserve a good life.

I can no longer bring myself to feel anything towards heartless people like Beck who go out of their way to directly or indirectly cause suffering to other human beings. And yes, he is guilty of this by bring a conservatard talking head who riles up already stupid people into rabidly opposing any and all things progressive, often against their own interests. And unfortunately they and the people they vote for still have enough power to do real damage to this country by simply saying no.

I don't wish this on anyone, I don't derive any pleasure from this, but I don't care about it either. In fact, if Beck dropped dead 5 minutes ago, I wouldn't care. He is a hateful, spiteful, vile person and I won't spent a moment feeling sorry for him in the slightest. He makes his living lying about people and riling up the base fears and prejudices of the ignorant and easily swayed. Our empathy is better applied elsewhere. He isn't worthy of our concerns.

But if so, I'm having trouble gathering sympathy for him. Yeah, it sucks and I wouldn't wish it on anybody, but if you gleefully say people deserve to die for some minor offence, then you shouldn't be surprised some people may think the same of you.
