Alien Swarm standalone - free on Steam

Post by Feil »

For however long Steam feels like it, Steam is giving away a pretty fun top-down co-op scroller game called Alien Swarm. It's along the same vein as Left for Dead... if Left for Dead was a top-down scroller with slight rpg elements, and wasn't gory and disgusting. It used to be a total conversion mod for UT2k4, then Valve went and bought the rights to it and now it's a stand-alone built on Source SDK, with all the modding ability that goes with that. I think it's a pretty cool idea. The mod was good enough to make people want to mod it, so now it's its own game, neatly packaged with source code and mod tools. System requirements are about on par with most other A-list games being released these days.

HAHAHA! This finally came out?

It's been like... five years. I'll check it out just for a laugh; Source is such a source of japery.

So long as medics still execute people rather than waste medkits I'll play it. :)

I got it a day or two ago and had a look. Its quite fun.

I wouldn't say the system requirements are at all demanding compared to a normal game, its only about as demanding as a HL2 game cranked all the way up.

Certainly worth it for the price of free.

It's just lame that it doesn't really seem that much better than the UT2k4 version which was out a million years ago; I actually like the camera less. It's still fun and worthless in pub games, so... :)

Apparently, because it was remade using Source, it's actually possible to switch the camera and controls to first person mode. Has anyone who's played it tried that out yet?

I actually got bored with the game by the time this was posted.

There is only one scenario and no one could play properly, per usual on random internet games. Plus, many servers are hosted by players and thus suck. This is compounded by an idiotically oversimplified server-browser that will not tell you a server's ping.

It's also way easier than it used to be, which is kinda missing the point. They added piles of stupid guns instead of making the inventory system not-stupid, which is a shame.

Playing this first person seems like totally missing the point, too.

Was fun on insane difficulty or whatever it's called, played with 3 friends though so that helps. Once you figure out how to heal infestations and use flamers and telsas to neutralize mobs it got pretty easy even on that setting. Has potential just depends on how much the community will release stuff, it's only one night worth of fun at the moment but it is free can't complain.
