Problems upgrading to iOS4? Touch/Phone

Re: Problems upgrading to iOS4? Touch/Phone
Perhaps those afflicted are afraid of being mocked for still having a 3G, which is now two generations behind the curve? Or that is the perception among those who would have the ability to make the largest waves about it?
I'm upgrading to 4.0.1 as I type this. iTunes refused to update properly and I had to reboot just to uninstall. Is the unified inbox an option? I'd really rather not have my personal and business emails mixed together.

No, it is not an option, at least as far as I can tell. There are no obvious settings to turn it off, so keep that in mind before you upgrade (if you haven't already). However, each specific account's inbox will be listed immediately below the "All Inboxes" folder:
So, you can just tap the specific account's inbox and ignore the "All Inboxes"
By the way, the new OS has a spellchecker now, underlining misspelled words with a squiggly red line (Like Firefox does). Then you can tap the word and choose a correct spelling. That feature is system-wide (and is available for the 3G, as well).

Re: Problems upgrading to iOS4? Touch/Phone
I think the 3G Touch has the same amount of RAM as a 3GS Phone, but even then I've been hearing of problems with upgrading to iOS4. I guess I'll probably bite the bullet and get a 3G Touch soon (I really do need a portable WiFI device after giving my netbook to a poor friend who needed the upgrade) but really, when iOS5 comes out next year, I bet dollars to doughnuts the 3G Touch will run like shit on it, and I'll have to play a delicate game of avoiding accidentally upgrading to iOS5 with apps and iTunes.FSTargetDrone wrote:I don't know about any heat issues, but if the device you're looking at has the same kind of RAM as the 3GS (256 vs. 128), you should be okay. This is a RAM problem. And the iPhone 3G, at least, doesn't have enough of it.Cecelia5578 wrote:Well, it really depends on whether or not the Third Gen Touches being sold now that come with iOS4 pre installed suck. I don't want something that will overheat, cause my Pod to be as slow as molasses, and have other little bugs. I think if you upgrade right iOS4 should be fine on a 3G Touch, but I have yet to hear from someone who has bought a Touch since iOS4 came out that already has it on it.
I think the Zune is really nice, other than the severe lack of apps (though TBH playing stupid games on the train doesn't really appeal to me) and that I'm not sure MS really has a future for it. Though I guess that might depend on how MS integrates Windows Mobile and Zune. I think the Zune has the Touch beat as far as the purely media functions are concerned, its the apps and all that that make the Touch a stellar device (plus having a better browser than the Zune)
Unless I am mistaken, the current release for general consumers is 4.0.1, not yet 4.1.X. As I showed earlier in the thread, it monkeys around with the depiction of the bars and has some security updates.Stark wrote:Does anyone have experience with 4.1? I'm not bothering to upgrade my 3G until I hear the terrible performance is fixed.
In any case, performance on my 3G is just as wonky as it's been since I applied the initial 4.0 update.
I don't know if 4.0.1 is any worse than 4.0, but other than the security fixes, there seems little reason to update.
All I wanted out of the update was the damn folders. The unified mail inboxes is fine, but I don't even care so much about that.
If I knew performance would have been so adversely affected with 4.0, I never would have bothered to upgrade my 3G to it, even for the folders. Before the upgrade, my phone was reliably fast, it never hung (right now it can hang in the middle of writing a simple text message!) and was a pleasure to use. Now, I'm rebooting several times a day, for what good it does.
To me, this is at least as problematic as the iPhone 4's antenna issue, if not more so. And the antenna nonsense can at least be mitigated by using a case! This sluggish performance on the 3G post iOS4 seems to have been largely ignored. Outside of message boards, I see little discussion of it. It is almost crippling the phone and as far as I am concerned and is far more odious than the antenna issue.

I don't think Apple gives a shit about people who have older phones or touches, and wants to concentrate on high end users who'll buy the 4.

When I checked my email after upgrading it went straight to my personal inbox, which is what I was looking at before I upgraded. It has the same options as before, but they are under the inbox options now. So not a big dealFSTargetDrone wrote:No, it is not an option, at least as far as I can tell. As far as the upgrade went, it is way slicker than before. All my updated apps are much quicker to load, which is nice with things like Stanza and NYTimes, if you get interrupted by a call or text.

Re: Problems upgrading to iOS4? Touch/Phone
I've been continuing to follow along with possible "fixes" for the ios4 slowdown issue with the old 3G and apparently Apple is going to investigate the problems.
Anyway, I found some sites that suggest turning off Spotlight Search, followed by a double hard reset to mitigate some of the slowdowns. I've done this and it hasn't really helped much. Other suggestions are to turn off the Lyric display in the iPod app.
Nothing has helped. My 3G will reliably hang every 30 minutes or so of use.
What's most frustrating is that my iPhone4 order was canceled shortly after midnight a few days ago. I've been waiting well over a month and I'd gotten as far as the "Ships in 3-5 days" thing on my order status when the it was suddenly canceled. I called, of course, when I finally noticed. Despite Apple very quickly charging me (over a month ago, well ahead of the shipment, mind you), they canceled, and didn't give me an satisfactory answer or reason as to why. Turns out my insta-charge was going to be refunded within several "days." Um, no. I was bounced around to various people and eventually got ahold of a sympathetic person. He promised that my order will "almost definitely" be shipping within the next 2-3 weeks (this was last week). And on top of it, the best he could do was have the phone shipped to an Apple store. It was with no small amount of difficulty that I got him to have it shipped to the closest Apple store to me, which is a 20-minute drive. An e-mail will be sent to me and I have 24 hours to pick up the phone.
The other day, I bought 2 gigs of RAM from Crucial. Shortly after I placed the order, I was e-mailed that the memory was out of stock and when I wrote back asking about when it might be shipped, the rep told me it would be 7-10 days. I had paid a few bucks extra to get the 3-5 days shipping (or whatever it was--inside of a week) and before I was even able to ask about that, the rep said he was going to refund that shipping. It's just a couple of bucks, but I appreciate the gesture. And it turns out the sticks actually shipped sooner than expected and will be here on Monday via UPS. And I found that out from an actual phone call. A call made by Crucial.
Apple has my money. I don't have a phone. They are also shipping the phones to other countries now. That's nice, but I really feel that all outstanding domestic orders should have been fulfilled first. This is easily the longest I have ever waited for an online order of any kind and I've been buying things online since 1997.
I expect it's simply an issue of Apple running out of stock. I can understand that.
What I don't like is being charged the full amount before my item was shipped. No other company I've ever dealt with online charges me the full amount before the item ships. At the most, it's involved a deposit, but even that is rare (when buying computers). My iPhone's free shipping to my home has turned into free shipping to the nearest Apple store. An inconvenience, but at this point I'd even be willing to drive to Jersey to pick up the thing.

My 3g was FUUUUCCCKEED by OS4; so fucked that the Wifi was completely broken by OS4; it refused to turn on. So i took it into the Apple store and they gave me a new one.
The guy also indicated that they can swap as a fix for constant freezing and crashing but I didn't ask about the specifics.

Since iOS 4.0 brings so little to a 3g, I just downgraded. Works a lot better now and the only thing I'm missing is IIRC folders.

How does the downgrade procedure work? I've been considering it since the upgrade but I'm curious if its tiresome to keep your data etc.Dominus Atheos wrote:Since iOS 4.0 brings so little to a 3g, I just downgraded. Works a lot better now and the only thing I'm missing is IIRC folders.

Re: Problems upgrading to iOS4? Touch/Phone
I just bought a brand new 8 GB Touch off CL for $150 (the 2nd gen Touch Apple rebranded as a 3rd gen) and it works just fine with 3.1.3 preinstalled. I was greatly relieved it didn't come preloaded with iOS4 and there's no fucking way ill ever upgrade. Which means I need to be paranoid every time I start iTunes onmy laptop or download apps (exactly how do apps trick ya into upgrading to iOS4?). Anyhoo, rock on 2008 2G Touch.

With another 3G? Bastards should have at least given you a 3GS.JointStrikeFighter wrote:My 3g was FUUUUCCCKEED by OS4; so fucked that the Wifi was completely broken by OS4; it refused to turn on. So i took it into the Apple store and they gave me a new one.

Don't worry about it upgrading on its own. Even minor upgrades to the iTunes software itself ask for permission (or should--make sure it's set that way) before proceeding. You shouldn't be able to accidentally upgrade unless you are simply not paying attention.Cecelia5578 wrote:I just bought a brand new 8 GB Touch off CL for $150 (the 2nd gen Touch Apple rebranded as a 3rd gen) and it works just fine with 3.1.3 preinstalled. Yeah, everyone else, do not upgrade your 3G to iOS4. Trust me, trust everyone else who has done so, it is not worth it. Everything can and will crash once it's installed, from Contacts, to Notes to mail.
Strangely, auto-brightness no longer seems to work, as I noticed the other day when using the phone outside.

It erases all of your data but that can be restored from a 3.0 backup.Stark wrote:How does the downgrade procedure work? Re: Problems upgrading to iOS4? Touch/Phone
Shit. Most of the 3.x backups itunes made were corrupt for some reason. I'll have to check to make sure I didn't delete them all. With broken backups in the folder, my backups were taking literally hours to finish. Quality.
Re: Problems upgrading to iOS4? Touch/Phone
Oh! I was wondering if fast app switching just meant apps loaded faster. I noticed if I used a bunch the earlier apps didn't load particularly fast. So I think it only keeps 4 apps loaded in memory. I discovered the actual fast app switching feature while trying to double tap home to open the iPod controls. It opens up a menu on the bottom with your four most recently used apps.
