What do you use to clean LCDs?

I was reading stuff on the internet and it said that you could use... vodka... to clean LCDs. But that's obviously crap. And now my lappy top is, totally, leik covered in dusts and grimes and dandruffs, and ugly finger-smears, and I'm wondering how I can get rid of them. So, how does one reliably clean LCD monitors and TVs? What do you use to clean yours? Just a wet rag? Alcohol? A dry rag? Mangs, what's the best ways!

I just use a dry rag. Assuming you're actually taking care of your LCDs and not smudging them with fingerprints the worst you should have to worry about is dust.

A slightly damp cloth (so it doesn't drip) is suggested for the finger smears. Don't use alcohol -- there's a possibility the coating the manufacturer decided to use for the LCD can be damaged by it.

Get a soft cloth, microfiber eyeglass cleaning cloths work wonders, dampened with distilled water* and wipe the screen. If you use an eyeglass cleaning cloth that has been used with a eyeglass cleaner,make sure its washed well first as some eyeglass cleaning solutions contain alcohol which will eat away at some of the antiglare coatings used on LCDs/flat panels. Avoid any rough cloths, as they can scratch the screen along with the dust, particularly when done dry.

Note: I don't really now what your water situation is like in the Shroomland, though distilled is recommend in the U.S due to chemicals our water have added. They also sell dedicated cleaning solutions, though they are pricey. AVOID alcohol, and most commercial glass/surface cleaning products (unless they specifically say they're for LCDs) at all costs.

Only use a purpose designed cleaning cloth, or failing that something which is 100% cotton and ideally cotton which has been washed so its even softer. Anything which is even partly synthetic fibers like polyester will risk causing scratches.

A small amount of distilled or reverse osmosis purified bottled water works well as a solution as others have suggested, though in reality as long as your tap water is not loaded with minerals in all reality it will probably be safe to use once. The vital thing is to be gentle. Even with a moist cotton rag you can pretty easily rub off the screen coating. Also just as importantly, if the screen is really dirt, clean the rag multiple times as you clean the screen. Otherwise you are rubbing dirt back onto the screen which can also cause scratches.
