Isn't it only an abomination when the trader profits off his sales out of proportion? I mean, what, there's no distribution infrastructure in the Commune? Do Commune citizens not trade baubles or favors between themselves?

Won't the Commune buy technology it wants? :D

Trade? No, not really. The Sovereignty is an effectively post-scarcity society that pretends it's not because no-one has a clue how to run the place in any other way, and it doesn't really trade in the traditional definition of the word (beyond perhaps the occasional luxury product). The Dausendstern will drop by to say hi, see if there's any tech-exchanging you guys might be interested in, and basically get a feel for the place whilst (hopefully) establishing some form of mutually beneficial relationship.

Well when you get right down to it, what is the Commune but a post-scarcity economy that looks like a Generic Communist Mish-Mash with space lasers (and nanobots?)

Post-scarcity society will take a form dictated entirely by the social values of the people who live in it, because there are no other constraints on their behavior.

That raises an interesting question.

Unless we posit that the Commune is the galactic leader in everything (which strikes me as unreasonable), surely there must be some level of technology sharing and economic transfer between it and its friendlier neighbors- the Commune has to be getting something out of the agreements it signs with countries like Umeria. While calling this "trade" may be unpalatable to the Commune for ideological reasons, it still amounts to something along those lines.

Hey, who doesn't?

Besides, the Commune has enough nations they are willing to trade with to supply them in areas they are lacking.

Write something with the Iduran Confederation?

I mean, writing about space pirates is fun and all, but writing it all by myself is getting a little tedious.

Maybe a civilian Iduran ship gets lost and pisses off people on the way through your customs!
Maybe you want to smash space pirates in my friendly neighborhood shoal space!
Maybe you try to play one Iduran faction off another to gain (brownie points, shipping contract, civil war, etc.)
Maybe this post irritates you so much you decide to launch a war of annihilation against me! :D

There's certainly no lack of avenues with which to take your next post.

His dying screams turned the advance into a panic."'

There's an energy grid, and energy planning, but no energy trade inside the Commune. With outsiders, we just call it "tech transfer". ;) Not "tech trade". But yeah, it exists obviously.
PeZook wrote:Won't the Commune buy technology it wants? :D
It could try and barter for it (in exchange offering some service, political support or another technology), but it wouldn't "trade" it in a meaningful "galactic trade" sense because the Commune does not believe the galactic money serves any useful function whatsoever.

Monarchy yes. Byzantine law on the other hand still stipulates freedom of worship.

The Church has grown assertive, but this doesn't change the fact that the Byzantium still has Jewish and Muslim communities, never mind die hard atheists of UCSR descent.

Going camping for the weekend, so I won't be able to check on things for the next few days.

Wow, so much will be different. :P

In all seriousness, I plan to finish up the little developing incident I have after the Pendleton situation dies down a bit. No need to steal anyone's thunder... :P

Fair enough, but there still is the God Emperor thing going on, even if some people do not subscribe to the notion. I remember reading that there were populations of Japanese Christians in pre-war japan.

The Commune acknowledges only freedom from religion. "Freedom of religion" means to the Commune about the same as the freedom of drug dealers to a modern society.
