Telephones (rant)

Post by Tsyroc »

I don't know about the rest of the people here but I am really on the verge of hating telephones. What is supposed to be a helpful device is more often than not a pain in my ass.

Today there was a message left for me where a lady was reading a Bible passage. I didn't catch what one it was because I deleted it so fast but I found this even more annoying than the telemarketers that are always leaving me messages. What makes someone just decide to call people they don't know and read them passages from the Bible? :x

Throw your fixed phone away. Celulars aren't listed. And what do you us the fixed for, anyway?

Here, at least, there are already twice as much celular phones than fixed ones.

Why not contact the phone company and have them list you as ex directory? companies and other annoying prats such as bb's (bible bashers) cannot find you through the normal telephone directory, so saying that...neither can your friends, family and so on...

Somewhere, I forget where, are sound files of the tones that begin the *This number is disconnected* message. Add 'em to the beginning of your answering machine message...telemarketers hang up.

They're trying to get it killed, just like a similar measure in Maryland. The Asshole Telemarketer argument is "if you have a phone, you're inviting calls." I find this a dubious argument at best: take for example people who have unlisted numbers. After spending the extra money to have your phone number unlisted, telemarketers can *still* bother you because they're just using random dialers and calling until they get a person on the line. The extra money you're paying to the phone company (obviously in the hopes of cutting down on junk calls) is thus worthless. The prevalence of caller ID should also be a big clue to telemarketers that their calls are in no way, shape, or form desirable (alas, they don't seem to get the hint.) The persistance of those people truly astounds me, too: I'm amazed how many times I have to say "no" in different variations before finally getting them off the phone. Then there's the term "courtesy call" to refer to this sort of behavior: I'd love to know what fucked-up kind of rules of courtesy they learned to think that term applies to calling people during the dinner hour.

Legally, if you tell them to take you off their list they HAVE TO do it.

It's cut down on my call volume...

With the advent of more automation and the instant availability of mass-information world-wide, tasks are only increasing in number while removing the element of personality. For example, in the old days, one would attend daily or weekly meetings in which the supervisor would discuss various tasks with his subordinates and receive progress reports. Much of that now takes place through e-mail, and taskings in e-mails can quickly pile up, because e-mails can be sent with little forethought and analysis ... on a whim. Nonetheless, the new task is yet levied and must be completed to standard.

I hate talking on phones for the most part. Thats why I dread ever having to work a Help Desk position. But oddly enough, I learned a little bit about installing phones at my last job and found that to be kinda fun. Punching down new cable, adding the extention to the switch, etc.

Telemarketing should be made illegal, period. It is an unwarranted intrusion and there is not a single person out there who actually wants to receive these fucking phone calls. Forget this "no call list" bullshit and cut 'em off at the source.

I think you mistake *most* telemarketers as selling something that might not benefit people.. However, when I worked as a telemarketer (for all of two weeks) we only sold stuff that would benefit policemen and firefighters.

Yeah but some of them have been saying some bullshit about it being their freedom of speach and them being allowed to do it was a side effect of freedom of speach  .

There are other ways to market things besides phoning people up. Junk mail on your doorstep is annoying but at least you can either read it or ignore it at a time of your choosing. It does not forcibly intrude when you're sitting down to eat dinner, for example. I say again: telemarketing should be simply criminalized. Problem solved.

At least toned down upon. Set hours, for sure. But then, how the hell are telemarketers supposed to know when you're eating dinner, Mr. Wong?

Interrupting dinner is one thing, but calling right when you're in the bathroom in the middle of taking a shit or a shower.
