If there's iron-handed oversight, why not? Like it or not, tapping the resources in the gulf is a good idea. Proper Authorities just need to keep a very tight rein on the corporate trash running the project.Darth Nostril wrote:Pretty much any news source says the same thing, they only change the anecdotal quote from a loocal at the end.

Why should a company with as shitty a record as BP get to keep the lease? The federal governemtn ought to revoke it and sell it to another company with a better safety record.Highlord Laan wrote:If there's iron-handed oversight, why not? I agree with you completely. Sadly, BP getting kicked in the teeth right and proper isn't likely to happen.eion wrote:Why should a company with as shitty a record as BP get to keep the lease? Maybe congress can pass a 500% excise tax on all oil collected from that reservoir or require simultaneous relief wells on all deep sea drilling (which is what practically every other nation does), or play to their strengths and drag out proceedings so long that BP is forced to sell off precious assets.Highlord Laan wrote:I agree with you completely. It'd be awesome to see that happen. However, given the kneepads oil companies provide for Congress' comfort, it'll never happen. Most we can hope for is some light slap on the wrist and some "stern" regulations that can be easily avoided via loopholes in how said regs get written.eion wrote:Maybe congress can pass a 500% excise tax on all oil collected from that reservoir or require simultaneous relief wells on all deep sea drilling (which is what practically every other nation does), or play to their strengths and drag out proceedings so long that BP is forced to sell off precious assets.Highlord Laan wrote:I agree with you completely. I have no faith whatsoever in Congress' willingness or ability to do anything to keep corporate interests in line outside of politely asking that they be allowed to breathe through the nose as they deepthroat.
Never underestimate the ingenuity and cruelty of the Irish.

Oh I totally agree, when you have significant natural resources literally on your doorstep then you'd be an idiot not to harness them and BP really do need the money.Highlord Laan wrote:If there's iron-handed oversight, why not? It's just they could have waited a while before saying anything about it, at least until popular opinion cooled down. Right now BP are their own worst enemies.
So I stare wistfully at the Lightning for a couple of minutes. Two missiles, sharply raked razor-thin wings, a huge, pregnant belly full of fuel, and the two screamingly powerful engines that once rammed it from a cold start to a thousand miles per hour in under a minute. Life would be so much easier if our adverseries could be dealt with by supersonic death on wings - but alas, Human resources aren't so easily defeated.

I really dont care if they need the money. They made their bed and then shat on it. Let them sleep there. They should be barred from ever obtaining an oil lease again in the US, or any civilized country.
As for the oil, it is not the oil is sold on the open world market or anything. Oh no, that offshore american oil will go straight to the US
