Depends. If you mean super-AI such as that in the "Two Utopias" thread, then more than likely no. Assuming (key word) we can create artificial intelligence of that magnitude, most people will distrust it. Also, AIs are built by companies looking for profit. If they make a super-AI, what is it for? Again, people will mistrust it and it will not sell. If it is an attempt to take over the jobs of human, labor laws will prohibit its expansion.
If you mean SW-type droids, probably not, as well. Again, no one wants a robot replacing them, and it is far too expensive to make a $600K cleaning robot when you can buy a mop and bucket.
Sex-bots and translators? Fuck, yeah.
Personally I think the biggest reason we even bother to research AI is to see if we can do it. You know, just out of curiosity. Like sending men to the moon.

Don't worry, society is already gearing up for AIs, not just by making them smarter, but by making the average person dumber. Hell, 50 years ago, nobody ever would have mistaken an AIMbot for a real person. but nowadays they pass off for your typical AOL-user. We're not going to have human-like AI, we're just going to both meet in a sub-par middle. Oh, and they're doing the same thing for androids, too. That's why it's now considered 'sexy' for women to have straw-like hair, silicone breasts, and a slick coating of orange latex 'skin'. Again, we're both just going to meet in the middle. [/doomsayer]

Hmm...stupid robots and stupid humans uniting...seems deserving.Darth Utsanomiko wrote:Don't worry, society is already gearing up for AIs, not just by making them smarter, but by making the average person dumber. Yes, my airplane has both an Attitude Indicator, and a Airspeed Indicator. They are both extremely helpful for telling you your pitch attitude, bank angle, and true airspeed.Enforcer Talen wrote:think they are possible? are they a good idea?

Those are the exact same arguments advanced against every form of automation ever introduced in the workplace. It's ludditism.UltraViolence83 wrote:If you mean SW-type droids, probably not, as well. Yeah, otherwise we'd say cars wont be sucessful because people would keep their $20,000 and buy a pair of jogging shoes. No one wants a car replacing a good ol' fashion rickshaw & a hobo.Darth Wong wrote:Those are the exact same arguments advanced against every form of automation ever introduced in the workplace. You know why its cheaper to have robots to any kind of work? because once their smart enough to be unsupervised, they dont have operating costs. How? Because powering them is free. Why? The electric company's generators are tended by robots, and the oil/coal it burns is drilled/dug by robots. Once you have robots doing all that shit, its all costless, because their operation and upkeep is free. Excluding greedy rich assholes who dont see the advantage in giving away the products (whats the advantage? the advantage is that with no operational costs and no sales costs, theres also unlimited numbers of commodities and everyone can have anythign they want)
but only with AI.
but only with AI.

and who do you think will maintain them? AI robots. Again, no cost of maintainance. Manufacturing of replacement parts will be fully automated, mining of the necessary materials will be automated, itll all be automated. Remember, we're talking fully capable AIs here, not unreliable glitchy programs.

Um, Koji, this is kinda like the Star Trek "we don't need money" argument. Just because there isn't a paycheck being passed around doesn't mean that this stuff doesn't have a cost on the company. If company A's robots need twice as much power and repair than company B's robots, then company A is spending more. It's basic economics.
