Anecdotal but ... for years I kept having people tell me Maxtor made shit drives yet I've still got a pair of Maxtor's I bought nearly a decade ago running fine compared to a half dozen dead Seagates and WD's...
I've never had issues with Samsungs (though I have wondered), I worked with them doing front line support in a school environment.. they were only removed from service due to newer machines having new drives pre installed... now I have a big box of 80GB paperweights.

Yeah, I've had two Maxtor external hard drives for years and have never had a problem with them. The only reason I'm looking for a replacement is because the one is only 80GB and has to be plugged in to an actual socket to power it. I only use it as a backup to my backup, but can only use it for the most essential stuff.The_Saint wrote:Anecdotal but ... for years I kept having people tell me Maxtor made shit drives yet I've still got a pair of Maxtor's I bought nearly a decade ago running fine compared to a half dozen dead Seagates and WD's...

Mr. Harley: Your impatience is quite understandable.
Klaatu: I'm impatient with stupidity. My people have learned to live without it.
Mr. Harley: I'm afraid my people haven't. I'm very sorry... I wish it were otherwise.

Maxtor had some shitty drives back in the day... Like the 5.25" BigFoots, which were intended as cheap data storage drives, but broke down pretty often. They even came with just one year warranty. Maxtor killed the line soon after that. It was a weird idea anyways; by the time they were introduced, 5.25" HDs had already disappeared once, but Maxtor thought they could make them cheaper than 3½" drives due to lower data densities and looser mechanical tolerances. I guess it didn't work out like they hoped.The_Saint wrote:Anecdotal but ... for years I kept having people tell me Maxtor made shit drives yet I've still got a pair of Maxtor's I bought nearly a decade ago running fine compared to a half dozen dead Seagates and WD's...
Of course since 2007 Maxtor has been just Seagate's brand for value and external drives.

Except of course, the BigFoots were made by Quantum and the line was already being phased out by the time Maxtor acquired Quantum's hard disk divisionMarcus Aurelius wrote:Maxtor had some shitty drives back in the day...
