An Overview of Care Bears as Warp Entities in Warhammer 40K

Post by Manthor »

The Care Bears are something I am sure everyone is familiar with. But they are also quite powerful and if they existed in the setting of Warhammer 40K would count as a tremendously powerful and beneficial Warp Entity, or as beneficial as a Warp Entity could get. And I imagine the Inquisition would certainly be interested in such a manner of entity.

Lifted from http://forums.comicbookresources.com/sh ... p?t=143944 and http://forums.comicbookresources.com/sh ... p=11678166

First there are the Care Bears and Care Bear Cousins, where differences seem minimal.

Now, an overview of their abilities:

Technology
Flying cars with supersonic speeds to allow them global travel; "Star-o-Scopes" that can allow remote observation of individuals on almost any point on Earth, a fully operational teleporter and a submarine. I would imagine that their technology works on a similar basis to the Orks, with an element of belief and the effect of a latent psi force causing it to work.

Physiology
They seem to be anthropomorphic humanoid miniature bears, so they are quite likely an engineered species or some member of the taxonomic family Ursidae that has been exposed to the Warp. Possibly an experiment of the Old Ones or the Eldar which could not be effectively employed as a weapons system against the Necrons but could be used effectively against Orks.

However they are able to shield entities within their general vicinity from suffering the effects of mind-altering powers and negative emotions. The Spirit Book in one of the Care Bear movies proved capable of affecting the global population and its effects of affecting sanity and inducing negative emotion were ameliorated by being in close contact with the Care Bears.

Psyker Abilities
Care Bear Stare/Cousin Call: The Care Bears' ultimate weapon is the "Care Bear Stare," in which the collected Bears stand together and radiate light from their respective abdominal symbols. These combine to form a ray of "love", "good cheer: and otherwise positive emotions which could bring care and joy into the target's mind, as such affecting their emotional state and most definitely having a mental/neurochemical vector from its effects.

The Care Bear Stare varying looks. One has a beam coming from the abdomen being made up of several replicated images of the symbol. Another variation forms a rainbow when multiple Bears and/or Cousins are involved. To quantify it here is a short list of feats:
1)Undo a pretty extensive transformation upon human beings in "Land Without Feelings": When several runaway children were turned into barely-humanoid, servile slaves by Professor Cold Heart, the Care Bear Stare returned them to normal in a matter of seconds. It took the efforts of 10 Care Bears and they seemed drained afterwards though.

2)Thaw out an entire city: In "Care Bears Battle the Freeze Machine", the eponymous device had frozen the population of a (probably small) town. Again, the combined Stare of 10 Care Bears undid the whole damage, with zero harm to the population. Admittedly, they needed to have a tech genius adapt the Freeze Machine so that they could combine it with the Stare. So similar to the Culexus Assassin this form of Warp radiation can be channeled and controlled by technology.

3)Vaporize solid objects: In "Magic Mirror", the mirror in question was completely destroyed by the Care Bear Stare. So a powerful Warp/Chaos Artefact which we can define this extra-normal object can suffer damage from their attacks.

4)Reduce Entropy: In "Birthday", after a house was pretty much gutted by a kid with too much time on his hands, the Stare of a handful of Care Bears undid all the damage. It did not appear to even require a serious effort. An ability perhaps to reverse time in a localised volume.

5)Undo mind-control: In "The Magic Shop", when a ray-gun was used to shut down several people's positive tendencies, the Care Bear Stare effectively cancelled that effect. Though admittedly, that episode also had three Stares barely holding up against the ray for a few seconds in a direct confrontation.

6)Matter transmutation: In the same episode, the Stare transformed the raygun into a bouquet and the "magic shop" where it was about to be mass-produced into a flower shop.

7)Mental effects: In "Mayor for a Day", Abbotsville's children were turned mean not because of mind-control, but rather because of the "mayor"'s social engineering of controlled chaos. The fact that the Stare snapped them out of it and had them behaving well afterwards raises the unsettling question - to what extent does this thing respect free will? It remains unknown wether it was a de facto brainwash or if it merely forced greater awareness of how their behavior was screwed up.Nevertheless troops with sufficiently hardened minds such as Astartes and Grey Knights should be resistant to its effects.

8)Entropy reduction amplified through machines: In "Wedding Bells", Professor Cold Heart's sonic weapon was causing the Hall of Hearts - a rather large building - to break appart. The Stare of a single family member was enough to harness the machine's power into undoing all the damage.

9)Blocking fire and electric blasts: In various episodes where the Care Bears have gone against No Heart, their Stare (at least in small groups) has proven superior to his magical bolts. In "The Factory of Uncaring", he even turned into a dragon to breath fire on them - and three Stares were all it took to block his attack and bitch-slap him. Considering that No Heart is powerful enough to be a global threat, his constant defeats at their paws is impressive (even if he was a pretty weak strategist, admittedly).

10)Destroying evil creatures of magic: In the first movie, a dozen or so Stares were enough to destroy an evil spirit that had taken the form of a huge (at least human-sized) predatory bird. In the same movie, they lasted pretty long in a magical confrontation with a spirit powerful enough to turn off the morals and compassion of every being on Earth. The fact they eventually lost the fight is mitigated by their being at a disadvantage (the cousins didn't have their powers yet). In the second movie, they used the Stare to figh Dark Heart to a stadnstill - another magical entity (pretty obviously inspired by the devil of medieval folklore) of world-threatening power.

11)Perhaps the most impressive feat comes from "The Long Lost Care Bears", where we discover that two family members had been subconsciously maintaining a tropical micro-climate over dozens of square kilometers of a naturally arctic area for deades. The energy requirement for that is on the same order of magnitude as the energy used by all of the USA.

Perhaps I should have phrased it differently but I do expect responses in the form of people sharing their views on the matter and also in order to amuse others.A search of all my responses in this and other forums thus far will disprove any trolling intent,as seen in my threads in the SLAM and Fanfic subforums.

If you choose to interpret this thread as a matter of trolling where the intent (and my record so far has not shown any such behaviour) is not then it is up to your call as the moderator to lock it then, though I feel such an action is not justified and respectfully disagree with you Necronlord.

And the worth of such is an entirely subjective matter. It is meant more to amuse than anything else and in turn invite responses on the matter.Apologies for not making the purpose clear.

I was unaware the Teletubbies actually have any super powers. :wtf: At least the Care Bear StareTM actually has the ability to make you care, ie its a form of mind / emotion manipulation if you think about it.

Yea, now that I think of it I would not at all be surprised if something like them (abet a lot more sinister in nature and intentions) did exist in the 40K universe.

Keep in mind that their god of Compassion is also their god of Plague and that their god of hope is the ultimate chess master.
And than there is their god of love...

Well come to think of it he is actually quite a flat character.

So the interpretations of the Care Bears are as follows:

-Benevolent spawn of Tzeentch due to their ability to inspire hope, which is the purview of the Lord of Change.
-Slaaneshi spawn due to the emotional nature of their powers which include love
-Agents of Father Nurgle

However I am more inclined to think that perhaps they are a form of engineered life altered by the God-Emperor, due to them having some ancestry from the Ursidae taxonomic family, which resides on Earth. Given the wards around Earth and its defences, I wouldn't be surprised if the Adeptus Mechanicus at one point or another early on in the Great crusade decided to alter some bears and see how they could be engineered to channel the Warp in a positive manner.

Another thing to consider is if they would actually be positive.
Keep in mind that this is 40K, so anything that goes into it has to become Grim Dark.

I can imagine things like them being demonic overlords who force people to live on perfectly clean, perfectly happy demon worlds of perfect perfection... forever... perfectly happy.

Or perhaps being used as a kind of thought police by radical inquisitors.

That would make them the least evil faction in 40k. Chaos twists everything- there would need to be a catch.

What if the 'Care Bear Stare', banished negative emotions so throughly, it left the unaffected creature unable to defend itself, or act hostily, or even defiantly, even at their own peril or against their own beliefs? They become nice, happy, chiper, and obedient.

That would make the victims of the Care Bear stare, the perfect slaves.

Are they now suitable for 40K Warp Entities?

Or, instead of wiping out the negative emotions, it represses them for a period.

Without perodic 'stares', the repressed emotions build up, and then explode in a violent and bloody manner!

Personality + memory wiping would be a result of permanent wiping, and can be reversed.

Screw with the carebears, they reverse the stare, and suddenly, you have a horde of pissed-off-finally-snapped nutjobs to deal with.

The Ordo Malleus also thanks you, brave Imperial citizen. Also, your request to serve in a penal regiment has been granted. Have no fear, the Grey Knights will be delaing with this challange very shortly. In the mean time, start packing your bags. You have 1 hour to report to the local IG recruiting center, and after that hour has elapsed, they will drag your sorry arse out of your hab, kicking and screaming if need be.

The catch is that they maintain a mind control society.

Nah, to ensure that it reaches the proper level of scariness, we need Bladed_Crescent to write it.

Actually, wasn't the Warp originally kind of positive? I mean it seems the Warp is somewhat affected by the emotions of mortals, wasn't it kind of nice at some distant point in the past but war broke out resulting in mortals giving off more negative emotion vibes that changed the Warp entities into evil who then messed up stuff for mortals which made them even more angry which made near everything in the Warp into a total bastard?

Kind of like an out of control greenhouse gas effect, except instead of making all the water boil away and making it rain sulfuric acid then it destroyed all hope and made it rain tentacled swirly things shaped like naked vampire women with bees for eyes?

It could be that the Care Bears are some of the few surviving Warp Entities who existed during the "good" ages and sealed themselves off in a protected area called Care-a-lot. They exist in a near sterile environment with numerous protective barriers around their world and systems to ensure that no 'evil' warp energies get inside to pollute their world. If any evil got into Care-a-lot then it would be a like a contamination breach and could destroy their sealed of area.

Fortunatly, they developed the Care Bear Stare and other technologies to repel the evil Warp entities and keep themselves untainted. Their rainbow teleporter has a filter built in that lets them block or destroy any evil Warp energies from getting through the barriers while letting them perform recon on the outside world.

Also, each of the Care Bears and the Care Bear Cousins has their own emblem on their belly and their special domain, they could be some form of flegling Warp Gods or other creatures who keeping themselves alive by siphoning in belief about their own domains. They can't stand against the true warp gods, but they are capable of hiding in some obscure area and just staying alive.

The Care Bears are thus the ancient remnants of the once good Warp who are struggling to keep pure joy and happiness alive in a galaxy that knows only war and bloodshed. They might even be artificial constructs, like actual toy stuffed animals who were animated with pure positive warp energies in an attempt to create beneficial warp entities.

I don't know how durable they could be or even if they can reproduce. It could be that there are only so may good 'domains' that the Care Bears can control and manifest as more Care Bears. If Grumpy Bear gets eaten by an Ork then maybe the universal domain of "Grumpy" would come up for grabs and the other Care Bears would stitch together a new Grumpy to house it. If they don't grab up these domains then it would just gravitate to Nurgle who would then become the god of pestilence, big fluffy dogs, explosive hemorrhaging cancer, and Grumpy.

Then the Care Bears would have to track down Nurgle and de-grumpify him so that they can take his grumpy attribute and use it to make another Grumpy Bear. Unfortunalty, Medicine Bear isn't strong enough to fight off the jillions of super-diseases that Nurgle breathes out every second and they would all implode if they got too close. So they are pretty much all on defensive right now and only fight warp entities they know they can beat.

Oh, what if they are creatures of ideas and concepts? Whenever a new idea is created then it normally floats into the Warp and coalesses into a Warp god or some other being. The most powerful warp gods are basically the big fish in the pond who absorb all the various ideas and concepts into themselves. Since the Warp Gods are pretty evil then they somehow also taint whatever material objects are connected to their domains.

The Care Bears however are nice and want to grab up concepts as well, which they use to make new Care Bears with. If someone on some planet is about to make a brand new discovery or create something new then the Care Bears want to show up so they can claim the abstract concept of the thing for themselves.

Inquisitor: Aha! I just got the great idea for creating an untranslatable language that uses invisible colors as letters for an alphabet with no vowels! No other sapient being would be able to understand or decipher the language.

*Care Bears beam in on their rainbow teleporter*

Detective Bear: Elementary my dear Inquiitor, you've just brought a new concept into the universe.

*Arm Wrestle Bear and Hugalot Bear tackle the Inquisitor while Detective Bear plops an inert toy bear on the floor and fiddles with a little machine*

Inquisitor: What the? Who are you? What are you... graaaa...

*The machine sucks out the idea from the Inquisitors head and zaps the empty bear, giving it a stange off-white color and a twisted looking letter on its belly*

Splunge Bear: Ahh, I feel like a million <untranslatable gibberish>! Wait, who am I and where am I?

Detective Bear: You're our new Care Bear Brother, in charge of fresh concept to shape the universe. Actually, what do you do anyway? I can't make heads or tails of that freaky symbol on your belly.

Splunge Bear: Oh that's a <untranslatable gibberish>, its like a letter but written in dimensions that mortal beings can't comprehend.

Detective Bear: Oookay... well I guess its better than NuklaFisix Bear we got last week. I know that orks mean well and that technology is neither good or evil but lately the new ideas in this galaxy have been pretty awful. Eh, no offense.

Splunge Bear: None taken.

Arm Wrestle Bear: Yeah Roit, lesse boyz. We needs ta prop up whats leftaz this Inqizze guy an let im finish is "Splunge" idea.

Detective Bear: Yeah, probably.

*They prop up the Inquisitor in the corner and teleport out. After a while he regains consciousness and tries to finish working on the idea he made.*
Fry: No! They did it! They blew it up! And then the apes blew up their society too. How could this happen? And then the birds took over and ruined their society. And then the cows. And then... I don't know, is that a slug, maybe? Noooo!
