What happened before the Big Bang - An Overview

Post by Manthor »

http://web.uvic.ca/~jtwong/
Though an arguably irrelevant question, "what happened before the big bang?" is one question that many scientists have attempted to answer in the last 20 years, while trying to determine how the universe was created.

This set of web pages is intended to complement the material covered in the Physics 303 class. These web pages provide a brief overview of the current and historical theories of universe-creation. A discussion of the Hawking-Turok Instanton theory, a theory not covered in class, is then presented. It is included here to provide breadth in the knowledge of what cosmologists are currently working on in their quest to determine how the universe was created, and what may have occurred before the big bang.
A resource and an informative overview for the educated layman. It is done by a lecturer at the University of Victoria and covers the basic theories about universe creation in cosmology. It deals with physics and does not deal with any form of theology, pneumatology or philosophy.

I do not trust this as a reliable source. First and foremost, on the second page it makes the elementary mistake of thinking the big bang was localized. Second, it reads like a student project and not like the writing of someone who's familiar with the topic (I mean, seriously, "Though an arguably irrelevant question, 'what happened before the big bang?' is one question that many scientists have attempted to answer in the last twenty years..." is bog-standard student writing voice). Third, Physics 303 at UVic is a non-technical, non-mathematical, non-astronomical introduction to cosmology; the course website is http://visav.phys.uvic.ca/~babul/AstroC ... ntents.htm. Fourth, the course website does not seem to mention this companion page at all.

Yeah, I have to agree with Surlethe here. I glanced at the page, and it looks just like one would expect a student project done for an intro to cosmology for liberal-arts majors class to look. And it's not exactly live, having last been updated in spring of 1999.
