Hawking's theory is strong, but you would vote against doing it (weak disapproval)

Well you could always accelerate something to such a high percentage of C that its mass increases enough to become an artificial black hole.. but that would require energies akin to whats need to play billiards with stars.

Perhaps borrowed tech from Starbug ;)

I dont think this should really be a problem....let 'em get on with it...if something goes terribly wrong we wont know anyway :D

The mass increase would have to be enough to cause whatever you're accelerating to collapse into a singularity. You couldn't just accelerate a random particle to the mass of a black hole and expect to get results akin to those of dealing with an actual black hole.

which is why you'd be playing billiards with stars.

if it is tiny, it should have neglible mass and fall to the center of the earth and stay there, eating miniscure amount of mass alone the way. The problem is that if the core is fluid, the blackhole can eat mass slowly and grow into dangerous sizes, but unless it grow big enough to collapse continents, it'd be fine there. The time required is unknow though....

How is it going to stop? There is nothing in the planet which can actually provide resistance to it.

it has negligible rest mass, but if it becomes a black hole it will have mass equal to something like 20 of our suns.

That's the limit for the natural formation of a black hole through gravitational attraction. A black hole can theoretically shrink below that size over time through Hawking radiation, so it could be possible to have a black hole with less mass than that. However, a very low-mass black hole would be radiating so quickly (relative to its mass) that it would basically evapourate into gamma rays. If Hawking is correct, of course 8)

but can we create a blackhole that isnt that massive to begin with, or does it need to start off supermassive and shrink - thats the question i guess.

My only concern is that if it is only say 1 molucule big, then it sucks in another molucule. Then it can suck in 2 molucules pretty soon were toast.

One way to do it would be through the use of electromagnetic fields to compress a small mass into a point without relying on its own gravitational attraction. However, once you get to a certain point, the mass will forget about its charge.

Anyway, the point would be obvious: to confirm theories about black holes. The odds of a serious problem would have to be weighed into the decision to perform the experiment, of course.
I have heard ideas about such an experiment, but not for a while.

The plot to Doomwatch: Winter Angel springs to mind here, it could be very bad if we made one and screwed it up.

If Hawking is right, and the mass is low, it wouldn't be a problem. It would evapourate into gamma rays almost immediately and it would appear almost as if the mass put into the black hole simply annihilated itself into energy. If Hawking is wrong, and black holes don't radiate, then we'd be completely fucked over the long-term.

Indeed, in the Doomwatch movie, an energy firm produces a miniature black hole via collapsing a Carbon-12 atom in on itself via NOVA/NIF like lasers (I think it's this method anyway). The try this technique a few times I think to make one much larger charged mass that can be used to get rid of nuclear waste and potentially as a power source too.

However, in the end after many cover-ups and foul goings on, they find that the black hole is here to stay and won't be going away anytime soon and since the powerplant it is based in may eventually need to be demolished or a catastrophe may occur to it, then the black hole could escape and sink the the centre of the planet. It would take a bloody long time, but a black hole at the core of the planet would doom the planet in the future easily.

Of course, if a black hole does abide by Hawking's theory, then it would need a steady input of mass to sustain itself.

It's late and that's from memory so take it with a lot of salt, I do recall some real experimental ideas for charged black holes though and will look for them, problem with the Doomwatch series was that it all too often predicted eventual eco-problems.

I has average knowledge about Black hole..

And the idea about experiment on Black hole sound pretty interesting to me, But, not on EARTH, even our SOLAR SYSTEM because what if, there are something wrong.. I think this experiment should set on another solar system. I know we don't have a capable to travel faster than lightyears. This experiment should delay. I know it took forever to wait.. But, still safe. Well?

It give me a scary thought.. But, I hope Hawkin's theory is right.
