So i've been reading this topic - *VERY* interesting stuff btw, but i'm bothered since chimp and ape have been used interchangably when in fact they have very different intelligence and genetics. Chimps are far closer to humans genetically than apes are.

I realize that Apes learn by (heh) aping rather than teaching; is this true of chimps as well? Wikipedia didn't give me any really good leads (although this: http://primatology.net/2008/01/04/are-y ... the-chimp/ is really amazing to me).

Uh...Chimps, gorillas, orangutans and humans are all part of the hominidae taxonomic, which is also commonly referred to as "great apes".

So, uh...yeah, you can call a chimpanzee an ape. You can do it with a human, too, though many consider it an insult for some reason ;)

My mistake, I was thinking of Gorillas when I was saying and reading Ape's; glad I spoke up or I'd have gone on thinking that.

Lots of people make that mistake for some reason ; I guess it's because chimps are small, thin and scrawny while gorillas and orangutans are more, how to best say it...massive and stocky, so they don't really look alike, despite sharing most of the genome :D

And humans, of course, take being called an "ape" as an insult, so you don't really think of humans when saying the word ;)
