A Boy and His Dog. This is Don Johnson in his pre-Miami Vice days. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, it's about a man who can talk to his dog. Extremely odd ending, but very, very funny and twisted.

Reminds me of a book I read from an Australlian author. The main character had the ability to communicate to a degree with animals. He used this while he traveled through the post-apocalyptic lands of Australlia.Durandal wrote:A Boy and His Dog. This is Don Johnson in his pre-Miami Vice days. October Sky: This is a wonderful movie about 4 highschool students who were challenged by one of their teachers to make something of their lives. They were living in a dying coal town and there was no real future for any of the kids. They took up an interest in building toy rockets and firing them into the sky. After plenty of testing they start getting it right and they make it into the national science fair. At one point a fire is started and it is blamed on the kids because a rocket was seen. One of the kids teaches himself calculus IIRC and proves that their rocket was physically incapable of reaching the target. Sadly the teacher that inspired them had been ill and she took a turn for the worse. She did not live to see them go to college.
The movie is based on a true story and each of the 4 kids got college degrees, at least one even went to work for NASA.

I rented the DVD about a month ago as well. I thought it was good but they could have done without all the metal crap on the animal. I like that it was based on a true story but they should have stuck closer to the research. All that martial arts stuff seemed a little tacked on too.Darth Pounder wrote:Brotherhood Of The Wolf. I thought the metal stuff was needed to make it a monster, instead of it being really obviously a lion, especially considering that they had a nature guy looking for it. And didn't the evidence in reality lean towards a stripped hyena or something?
Oh yeah, I thought the martial arts was actually pretty cool. And at least they went with savate, as opposed to using something that was totally out of place. I think the dates are a bit wrong, but still, at least they didn't have the guy do aikido or something.

I didn't know there was more than one version. It was in english if that's what you mean.
I believe the evidence in reality pointed to it being a dog/wolf cross, trained to be an attack animal by sadistic bastards that just wanted to see people get torn to pieces and have everyone else scared shitless. They figure the guy who finally shot it was actually its master since he was able to basically walk right up to it and plug it in the head without it attacking. If they wanted to make it a monster than they should have just made it a monster. That would have been a good movie too.
As for the martial arts, I still think they could have had fight scenes that were just as good and stayed within the time frame.

I have the 3 disc Canadian release. There was also an American one. I think that one was missing some stuff.Mark S wrote:I didn't know there was more than one version. It was in english if that's what you mean.
I got the hyena thing from the DVD booklet. Gave some history about the story.I believe the evidence in reality pointed to it being a dog/wolf cross, trained to be an attack animal by sadistic bastards that just wanted to see people get torn to pieces and have everyone else scared shitless. What do you mean? It was pretty much the same timeframe, if I remember correctly. The dates for savate being created have been differing when I looked it up.As for the martial arts, I still think they could have had fight scenes that were just as good and stayed within the time frame.

Neoolong:
The version I saw had three discs. I got the dog thing from the interview they did in one of the special features with the French historian who had written a book on the subject. He said it was most likely a half-wolf in reality but understood why they used a lion. It wouldn't be as dramatic or scarey because a wolf wouldn't be able to flail people around like the thing did in the movie.
Maybe you're right about savate. I didn't think it looked that much like hollywood kung fu though.
