Server relocation

Post by Darth Wong »

OK, after that abortive attempt to try a new server, I'm going to keep it on this server as an interim measure and try to find another candidate for a new home. Please bear with me during this process.

I know I sound like an idiot, but what exactly is a server? Is it the thing you run the site of or something?

it´s basicly a computer which is permanently connected to the internet. as you´ve already guessed, it´s the thing or the computer which the site is running on.

Oh, thanks. So you mean that each site on the internet has one place where they are constantly running off of.

yes. of course one server can be used to host more than one site.

if you´re interested in deeper information on that, someone else might be better help since my knowlege about servers and computers is very limited.

Right here with nearly a degree to boot in this subject, any other questions?

Quick expanding on what has been said above

If you want to see anything on the Internet its hosted by a server somewhere, Some servers a giant affars composing a few hundred Ghtz of Proccess Power and likely over a gig of Memeroy all togther with a OC line to back it up

Others can be simple P II's on a simple 128k ISDN line

All you realy need for a server is a Dedicated line(D-ISDN, SDSL or HDSL, Any T line(T-1,3,5 ect) or OC series)

Gee, that would be nice :)

Unfortunately, it's also beyond my price range :(

I've considered self-hosting it on a high-speed DSL line (640kbps upload). But with 50 users online, if they all simultaneously grabbed the main page, that's 50 x 10kB = 500 kB, which would take 6 seconds (never mind server CPU load). I can't really project how fast or slow that would be, or whether 50 simultaneous users would actually grab a page at the same time (for all I know, that's typical).

Also, any surfing activity on my part would slow it down, and my ISP has rules about not hosting a webserver through the connection (which would be the biggest problem right there, since they can simply block incoming port 80 connections if they feel like enforcing compliance, and for all I know, they already have). Too bad, because this would be the cheapest option.

But I'm looking at other webhosts right now, so we'll see.

Now hold on Mike, If I where to drop dead tommrow(mmmmm Mc-ribwich... *Cough hack! uuuhhh *thud)
And I left everything to do you could techicaly host this Web-Site and forum off your own domain with an exsusive OC-13 Connect just for the Forum and Website on a Itanium Server Farm for about two WHOLE WEEKS! before my money ran out :P
But that would be a fun two weeks
