My local FOX affiliate is running a story on the power of prayer.
It's about a girl with split personalities (one of which was extremely violent, and was described as 'winning' out over the other ), whose family turned to prayer to help her. Now, I wonder how many fucktards are going to try doing this to 'help' people with severe psychological problems...and I wonder how much money FOX is going to be taken for.

A medical study was released about half-a-year back concluding that prayer had no effect on patients' recovery. So, if there is a God, he's not listening.

The fact that life expectancy for North American Christians is about a decade shorter than life expectancy for heathen Okinawans and Japanese should tell you something about the healing power of prayer.

Actually, I think is says more about the fact that Americans are a bunch of fat fucks.

That say a lot about prayer, if it can't overcome something as simple as excessive amounts of fat intake.Durran Korr wrote:Decade? Damn, I thought it wasn't quite that bad, more like a half decade.

Part of that has to do with the diet...Darth Wong wrote:The fact that life expectancy for North American Christians is about a decade shorter than life expectancy for heathen Okinawans and Japanese should tell you something about the healing power of prayer.

Actually, you're right, it's more like a half-decade; I guess I was exaggerating. Nevertheless, the fact that they do live longer disproves the silly notion that prayer has healing power, since they get none of it and Americans get it in spades.Durran Korr wrote:Decade? Damn, I thought it wasn't quite that bad, more like a half decade.
Besides, the numerical life expectancy only tells half the tale; Okinawans and Japanese are much healthier in their old age. There are 34 centenarians per 100,000 people in Okinawa compared to 10 in US (yes, more than three times as likely to live to 100 and beyond). And incidence of things like osteoporosis and heart disease is staggeringly different, with Okinawans sufferingly 80% fewer heart attacks than Americans (source: Seattle Times article on Okinawan health). An old American is much more likely to be bedridden, diseased, and kept alive by machines than an old Okinawan.
Very true. The Seattle Times article was quite clear about the horrid effects of the American diet. But if prayer had genuine power to overcome the laws of nature, you'd still think those heathens would be dying off a lot sooner than the God-fearing Americans.Actually, I think is says more about the fact that Americans are a bunch of fat fucks.

Indeed, I can't imagine prayer having anything other than a placebo-like effect, but I'd be skeptical of even that.Darth Wong wrote:Actually, you're right, it's more like a half-decade; I guess I was exaggerating. Re: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
I'd guess that any "healing powers" of prayer are some sort of a placebo effect, which makes far more sense to me than an invisible man in the sky healing them. If God is with these people, then why doesn't he just heal them immediately and let them live to 120? That would be a good question to anyone who considers faith healing valid.

Yes, there is a placebo effect for those that believe prayer will help. I know several people that feel better, just by being told someone is praying for them to get better, myself included. For me, it's more the idea that someone cares enough to do so, rather than a belief that it will help, but eh.Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Whta scares me is the Christian Scientists. I've read their magazine at the local laundrymat (those that use laundrymats will understand the need to read ANYTHING to pass the time )
These folks believe that since humans are made in God's image, the Body is perfect, even if the Soul isn't. Therefore, you *Can't* be sick, have a broken limb, cancer, whatever, because God Won't Let You. The Body is Perfect, and *Nothing* can harm the Perfection of the Child of God.
Don't go to the ER, just sit at home on the phone with a "Mentor" from your church, or from the national hotline, and you can Pray the Imperfection Away.
After all, you are made in God's Image. You are Perfect, thus nothing of this world can harm you.

That would be my position. Its certainly self-induced, but if it works, what do I care?LadyTevar wrote:Yes, there is a placebo effect for those that believe prayer will help. I would say that there are a lot of other factors involved. Not that it matters anyway, one has to prove prayer is helpful, not disprove it.Darth Wong wrote:The fact that life expectancy for North American Christians is about a decade shorter than life expectancy for heathen Okinawans and Japanese should tell you something about the healing power of prayer.
I am capable of rearranging the fundamental building blocks of the universe in under six seconds. I shelve physics texts under "Fiction" in my personal library! I am grasping the reigns of the universe's carriage, and every morning get up and shout "Giddy up, boy!" You may never grasp the complexities of what I do, but at least have the courtesy to feign something other than slack-jawed oblivion in my presence. I, sir, am a wizard, and I break more natural laws before breakfast than of which you are even aware!

Probly because of the excessive fat intake of typical Americans, but I'll bet the REAL reason is that God is a fucking racist misogynistic homophobic hate-spewing pig cunt who has the mentality of a four-year-old and wants to send everybody to Hell NOW NOW NOW RIGHT FUCKING FOOT-STOMPING HAIR-PULLING CHILDISH-TEMPER-TANTRUM NOW! I think hope is the important thing. If prayer gives people hope that either they'll get better or things will be better for them after they die, then great. If you can even take a little bit of the edge off their misery, then it's worthwhile. Praying to cure a headache is just stupid. God's already answered your prayers--he gave aspirin chemical properties that thin the blood and reduce pressure on the sinuses and other tissues in the skull, alleiating pain, and created doctors and scientists to discover it.
Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.--Ada Louise Huxtable, "Farewell to Penn Station", New York Times editorial, 30 October 1963

The japanese drink very little red wine, and they are far less likely to die of heart attack than the British or the Americans, the Italians drink copious amounts of red wine and are far less likely to die of heart disease. The Japanese also eat far less fat and the French eat far more fat and are still healthier. So it isn't diet that's bad, its speaking English that kills you.Darth Wong wrote:The fact that life expectancy for North American Christians is about a decade shorter than life expectancy for heathen Okinawans and Japanese should tell you something about the healing power of prayer.

Don't make fun of prayer. You'd be surprised at how helpful it is as a tool to help people who have mental illnesses like depression and dementia. For that matter, a study is in the works that shows how spirituality and just a simple diet drastically decreases recidivism in prisoners.
While it may not be God, prayer and spirituality offers hope and faith, both of which act on the mind in many ways.
