My dad was a preacher while I was growing up, and he seemed to think that the "sex talk" was taboo. He never had one with me, either. This was bad on his part because my "sex education" came from friends and porn. That could be very bad for a child and lead to dangerous notions.

Eh, I think the sex talk might help lessen the impact of thinking about/hearing your parents having sex. I absolutely cannot view my parents as sexual beings without becoming grossed-out, but having the "where do babies come from" with my mom when I was 7 and purely curious, and then later having the "well, why have sex?" talk with dad at the outset of puberty made the idea less revolting.

Regarding Asians and sex education...
Sex isn't generally mensioned (at least not in my family) but Asian culture is VERY conservative in many aspects. If a girl would come home pregnent, she would probably get disowned by her family (an improvement from the traditional way, in which she would be beaten half to death, with a high possibility of being disowned after that). Remember, family honor is everything. Disgrace yourself, and you disgrace the family, and your future suddenly becomes bleak. Modern families resemble "Nuclear families" more, with the mother and father passing judgement, instead of the all powerful head of the vast extended clan. Therefore, less possibility of being disowned (and beating someone half to death doen't fly in America).

It wasn't some quasi-religious thing in the case of my family. It was my parents telling me that if I knocked some girl up they would be furious because it's such a goddamned stupid fucking thing to do, and I'd be fucking up my own life. I don't imagine the motivation is that much different in the case of a female child.

Unless it's done for religious reasons, in which case it's OK . Seriously, older generations worldwide seem to have this attitude that beatings are OK, and the use of straps and broom handles and other devices for a beating is still considered acceptable by most old coots. It's just one of the major causes of teenage pregnancy that nobody thinks about. I think of it as something like this. You have a nine year old boy with absolutely no knowledge in how to throw a punch, much less use a firearm. Out of nowhere, you give him an AK-47. What is he going to do with that sort of responsibility?

Odds are more often than not that he is going to use it for its intended purpose. He is going to destroy something, more often than not, being of a curious nature. We don't know <what> he's going to destroy, it might be himself, it might be someone else, or it might just be personal property.

The solution to this problem? Well, my parents solved the problem like this. They told me two things. One, all guns are considered to be loaded, and should be handled as such until you have personally verified the weapon is not. Two, a loaded weapon is designed to destroy things. Do not point a weapon at something unless you <absolutely> intend to destroy it.

Anyways, back to teenage pregnancy. Women are growing up earlier causing women running around earlier with the equipment that they need to know the consequences of using. Now we can (a) take this equipment away from women by selectively removing hormone grown milk from their diets. Or we can (b) teach our daughters and sons about the consequences of sex at age nine or ten because this seems to be the age at which people are coming to puberty about now. There's always possibility (c) where we consider maturity to be a mental thing instead of a physical thing... but that is much.. much harder.
