Nvidia driver has stopped responding and has been recovered.
A short while ago, I was having trouble installing my new 460GT's drivers on a Win 7 system. I got it running. Recently, though, it's giving me an interesting error 'Windows Kernel Mode (number here) has stopped responding and had been restored." Removing all my drivers, installing the newest and latest stable releases (and the beta, though the latest stable is more recent than the latest beta available from Nvidia) and it seems to strike most reliably with Youtube videos, or trying to run actual games, and intermittently when playing videos off my HDD, but with excessive tearing.
The latest Nvidia drivers are the WHQL 260.89 drivers, and neither those, the old beta, or the old stable release seem to have solved the issue. Does anyone have an idea, or is my best bet to dig out my old 8800GTX and waiting for a more comprehensive solution from NVidia?
For the record, I have gone and looked for additional information, but I couldn't find any better information than what I mentioned above.
GPU- Nvidia 460GT
CPU- Intel
Ram- 6GB DDR3
OS- Win7

Last time I've seen something like that it was a busted GPU.

Oh for fuck's sake, this is why we need a tech support forum.
There are many steps to go through before the card is declared dead.
There are many steps to go through before the card is declared dead.
- Has this card ever worked before?
- Has this computer ever had a different card in it before?
- Did that card work?
- What was the make and model of that card?
- How long has it been since Windows was freshly installed on this computer?
Re: Nvidia driver has stopped responding and has been recove
Have the drivers, or the previous drivers, been removed from the system thoroughly? That takes a surprising amount of work for Vista and Windows 7, since you actually have to nuke the drivers from the system's driver store before trying to reinstall, which is a whole goddamn bloody pain in the ass to do.
I can post links to instructions tomorrow once I get to work, since I have them all lined up there.

Don't worry, I wasn't going to give up just yet. It was momentary pessimism, not defeatismDominus Atheos wrote:Oh for fuck's sake, this is why we need a tech support forum.

Has this card ever worked before?
Yes. For a period of a few weeks after taking it out of the box and installing the drivers the first time.

Yes.

Yes.
What was the make and model of that card?

How long has it been since Windows was freshly installed on this computer?
Not quite a year, since I had to reinstall it a short while ago after I wiped a drive (not my primary drive) that turned out to have boot info on it.
I've used Driver cleaner, but if you have a more comprehensive solution, Edi, I'd be glad to hear it.

The first thing I'd try is a system restore to before you installed the card while the old card is in there, then uninstalling the driver, then installing the card.

So, Old Card in-> System Restore-> Driver uninstall-> New Card In-> Driver Install, Dominus? Or install new drivers with old card?

Either one, it shouldn't matter. Just so long as the computer doesn't have old drivers that don't support the new card when you install it.

Re: Nvidia driver has stopped responding and has been recove
Thank you all for your help, my GPU is now functioning again.
It might not have technically been the drivers at all, but the GPU force quitting to save itself- upon opening my computer to swap my GPU, I discovered one of my case fans, the one closest to my GPU had become unplugged.
I still proceeded with the suggested steps. The GPU works now. It's not dead. Time for a celebrator installation of Fallout New Vegas.

Sometimes, some software have a way of messing with GPUs, causing them to crash. It does happen.

Nvidia had drivers that would kill GPUs by somehow disabling the fan and therefore cook the GPU. Fortunately they have since have fixed it.Fingolfin_Noldor wrote:Sometimes, some software have a way of messing with GPUs, causing them to crash. It does happen.

Mu ATI HD4870 card has that problem. Even with the latest drivers. As long as the fan is set on automatic control, it never runs. Setting it on manual override makes it work like a charm.Enigma wrote:Nvidia had drivers that would kill GPUs by somehow disabling the fan and therefore cook the GPU. No update so far has fixed it and the problem has persisted for the better part of a year

My 4870 has none of that issues, so that is interesting...Edi wrote:Mu ATI HD4870 card has that problem. Even with the latest drivers. As long as the fan is set on automatic control, it never runs. Setting it on manual override makes it work like a charm.
