I'm seconding Folti on the economic downfall. I had the fortune to buy my new home in that era, and from signing the contract to paying two weeks later, the Forint fell over 10%. This continued for months, and at the end, the Forint was down 30% or so.
Imagine your mortgage increasing by 30% within two or three months. Interest rates in the double digit range.
And then remember that you CAN'T walk away from mortgages outside the US. The banks will have you drawn and quartered, and then rape your remains for as long as it takes to get their money back.
