Question about cyber-security and certification

What sort of important certifications are there related to cyber-security? I've been looking around at Google, but I have no idea of what counts as important, and what isn't.

What type of certifications are you talking about? Procedural certifications or worker certifications? Cisco certifications are a big one employee wise, system wise audit companies like SAS 70 can provide certifications to ensure your procedures are up to snuff. You'll have to be more specific.

The Information Security Officer at my university recommended the CNSS 4011 in a presentation he gave last week. It is apparently an entry-level information security concepts certification, which is often requested or required for people working on government information system projects. Beyond that, I don't know.

This is the type of stuff I'm looking for.

Well the most basic is CompTIA's Security+, and another common one is (ICS)2's CISSP. Then nearly all vendors have security certifications that cover general security and then advance security using that vendor's products, such as HP and Cisco.

I would say CISSP is certainly the most well known, vendor-neutral cert for IT Security.

The GSEC offered by the GIAC (run by the SANS Institute) is also very popular (I completed mine in February). Some say the GSEC is a more "practical" cert as it tends to focus on hands-on subject matter a security professional would deal with every day. As opposed to the CISSP which covers a much wider range of topics including some you may not typically consider associated with information security.
