That is true. It is possible to tell good stories in few episodes. But consider shows like Stargate : Universe. They have slow plots that build up after a few episodes and just as you get interested then BAM ! The show is out for many months. You lose interest and when it returns to air again the story feels different because you are no longer following the plot threads with same keen interest.Crazedwraith wrote:Strange, everyone seems to think BSG's first season was its best; i.e The short one.Sarevok wrote:Half seasons are too short. Less episodes mean more story and less filler.
Though, granted this is only if the writers actually realise they are writing two short seasons and not one long one. The half-season thing also leads to silly dvd boxsetting. Oddly I pay money for an 8 episode series of a british show while bristling at the idea of buying a 10 episode half season of an american one. So they're not doing themselves any favours there.

Re: Caprica cancelled.
And again how is this different in the case of half seasons than full seasons?
Re: Caprica cancelled.
You know, that sounds like they just don't know how to write for half-seasons, then, as opposed to it being a fault of the medium. I mean, do you blame novels for Kim Stanley Robinson not being able to write a short story to save his life?Sarevok wrote: That is true. It is possible to tell good stories in few episodes. Invited by the new age, the elegant Sailor Neptune!
I mean, how often am I to enter a game of riddles with the author, where they challenge me with some strange and confusing and distracting device, and I'm supposed to unravel it and go "I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE" and take great personal satisfaction and pride in our mutual cleverness?

Only the fact that it is officially called a "half season". It really sounds like "half finished"...Crazedwraith wrote:And again how is this different in the case of half seasons than full seasons?
As a matter of fact, you could also have the opposite: No season at all, with episodes every 2 or 3 weeks. They'd probably need to be longer and end with cliffhangers or unresolved intricate plot that will keep people hooked up until the next one. But to avoid the "Dallas effect", you'd need too to have a precise story that's completely written before even the first shot.
And maybe also hook people up by giving the total number of episodes there's going to be. Instead of "Episode 1: Homecoming" it would rather be "Episode 1/42: Homecoming". People will die to know what's so important in having exactly those 42 sub-stories.

Re: Caprica cancelled.
I watched the first 3 episodes before I lost interest. Too bad; the premise was great, but the execution was lacking.
Re: Caprica cancelled.
I've been on and off watching for most of the time it's been on. Trouble is, I hardly care about anything going on. Usually I'm doing something else because the plot is glacial in movement, and the characters' progression (if it's a character drama) doesn't move all that much. Beyond the fact that the premise "take away most of the sci-fi parts of BSG, take away the space guns and leave the religion" is a stupid one, even the "drama" isn't compelling, and it's so far before anything interesting actually happens with the Cylons that it's hard to really care.
I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, and even though I was watching it, it was more because there was nothing else on. I won't morn its loss.

It's Jodan, not Jordan. If you can't quote it right, I will mock you.
Re: Caprica cancelled.
They did not even leave the real religion in it, because we all know the monotheism espoused by the final five is not the same shown in the show.CaptJodan wrote:I've been on and off watching for most of the time it's been on. Re: Caprica cancelled.
Hell I only watched the first two or three episodes before giving up on it. Watching paint dry was more entertaining.
So I stare wistfully at the Lightning for a couple of minutes. Two missiles, sharply raked razor-thin wings, a huge, pregnant belly full of fuel, and the two screamingly powerful engines that once rammed it from a cold start to a thousand miles per hour in under a minute. Life would be so much easier if our adverseries could be dealt with by supersonic death on wings - but alas, Human resources aren't so easily defeated.

Re: Caprica cancelled.
The ending of nBSG made no freaking sense, but then I heard that Caprica was going to be a Drama set well before the 1st Cylon War. Naturally, you'd think it would be covering how the cylons came to be created in the first place, wouldn't you? Apparently not.
We're really talking about a day-time soap, right? I mean, check out the group photo plus7 is using to advertise the show. Looks like stock cardboard-characters who should be showing between Days of our Lives and the Bold and the Beautiful. I mean, this is Dallas, even down to the leather-clad rebel, the male models, the trophy wife and all the fake tans.
Ref the half-seasons, can't say I've ever noticed it. Since I tend to get isolated from TV feeds for months at a time, with no warning, I've always bought shows by the boxed DVD pack. I can see how the '3-episodes and a long break' could really piss off fans who do try to watch them on the Telly, though. Was this simply a producer/network/marketing fuckup, or is there a rational reason for filming and televising the shows like this?

Re: Caprica cancelled.
Guys, just did a search on Caprica and found that it was threatened with cancellation by an entirely new series called 'Chrome and Blood'. Set between Caprica and nBSG, the blurb I've states that they really will detail the creation and rise of the Cylons (promises!).
Has anyone heard anything about this new show? I certainly hadn't heard any rumours until this popped up on a basic google. Apparently, one of the major characters will be a young Adama...

Threatened with cancellation? It already has been cancelled (presumably to make room for Blood and Chrome).SeaTrooper wrote:Guys, just did a search on Caprica and found that it was threatened with cancellation by an entirely new series called 'Chrome and Blood'. As for Blood and Chrome there's been a thread on it since October 23rd. You didn't notice it listed on the first page of this exact forum?

Actually I seem to recall someone on the show's production (Moore?) pitching or describing the show as being (or trying to be) a lot like Dallas.SeaTrooper wrote:I mean, this is Dallas, even down to the leather-clad rebel, the male models, the trophy wife and all the fake tans.
