Proposition 23

Post by Sean Mulligan »

Proposition 23 needs to be defeated. its passage, would devastate efforts by California to combat climate change. The proposition is being funded by out of state oil industry people who are using claims of lost jobs to wreck California legislation, which is the toughest in the world at controlling carbon emissions.

You might want to provide some context for those forum-readers who don't live in California.

To give a synopsis:

A year or two ago, the CA legislature passed a bill attempting to address climate change. It mandated a roll-back to 90s levels of carbon emission with a state cap and trade system. Proposition 23 is an initiative which would mandate a hold on this legislation until the unemployment falls below a certain benchmark, because business won't hire more people if they have to pay for their pollution, or something. It's being financed, by and large, by the oil industry. Even Republican legislators and the Governator are against it, which really tells you something.

So vote against it? I'm not sure what you'd expect anyone who doesn't live inside California to do. Plenty of other states have all kinds of stupid laws to smack down like the new personhood for fetuses law fundies want to pass in Colorado.

I was addressing this to members living in California. The proposition would really set back efforts to fight global warming.

Maybe you should re-think your outreach activities.

Though to be fair to him, it doesn't really take much of an effort to post a few lines on SD.net for the potential of a few votes from those who do live in California. Taken by itself you wouldn't expect much of an effect, however if this is part of a broader effort to get people to vote with him it can't hurt, and requires very little effort on his part.
